Abstract

An embodiment of the present invention implements some or all major servo subfunctions for a storage device in integrated servo fields comprising sequences of encoded bits having selected mathematical properties. The integrated servo field is composed of a number of encoded sequences, which are members of a selected sequence set that is constrained to preferably provide some or all of the following functions: the Servo Track Mark (STM), the Position Error Signal (PES) and location information such as the track-ID. The juxtaposition of sequences in the servo wedges is additionally constrained to increase the detectability of the contribution of adjacent sequences in the read signal. The integrated servo fields can provide a Position Error Signal (PES) in relation to the center of a data track through the amplitude of the signal read for adjacent sequences.

Dependent claims

An information storage system comprising:

a disk with a plurality of prerecorded servo fields arranged periodically thereon, the servo fields defining a plurality of concentric data tracks, each servo field including at least one sequence which is a member of a predetermined set of at least eight equal length sequences of at least eight encoded bits, the sequences being arranged in the servo fields so that sequences that are adjacent in a cross-track direction are mathematically orthogonal, and the sequences being arranged in the servo fields in a plurality of predetermined sequence combinations in which each predetermined sequence combination is mapped to an integer location identifier, and wherein the set of sequences is mutually plesiosynchronous with tau equal to one.

An information storage system comprising:

a disk with a plurality of concentric data tracks with prerecorded servo fields arranged periodically thereon in servo wedges, each servo field including at least first and second integrated sequence fields for each of the data tracks, first and second integrated sequence fields for a selected track being readable by a read head centered on the selected track,
each integrated sequence field including a selected ordered sequence of at least eight bit values with each selected ordered sequence of bit values being a member of a predetermined set of equal length bit values containing at least eight unique ordered bit value sequences, wherein first and second integrated sequence fields for the selected track in combination encode one of at least sixty-four possible values,
the selected ordered sequences of bit values in the first and second integrated sequence fields being arranged in each servo wedge in a predetermined pattern that includes a subset of at least sixty-four contiguous tracks in each servo wedge and wherein the selected ordered sequences of bits in first and second integrated sequence fields encode an integer track identifier within the subset, and the predetermined pattern being repeated a plurality of times in each servo wedge, and the selected ordered sequences of bit values in the integrated sequence fields being arranged in the predetermined pattern in the servo wedge so that each selected ordered sequence of bit values differs in exactly one half of the bit values from adjacent ordered sequences of bit values in the servo wedge in a cross-track direction.
