A method for treating obesity or diabetes in an individual comprising non-systemically administering to the distal gastrointestinal tract of an individual in need thereof, a pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a therapeutically effective amount of an enteroendocrine peptide secretion enhancing agent, wherein the pharmaceutical composition is formulated for targeted delivery to the distal gastrointestinal tract and comprises at least one matrix and the enteroendocrine peptide secretion enhancing agent is a bile acid, bile salt, bile acid mimic or bile salt mimic.
