Abstract
Systems and methods for wiping and verifying the wiping of a data storage device where the dirtying of blocks of the storage device is tracked and only the dirtied blocks are scanned to verify if the storage device has been sufficiently wiped.
Claims31
A method, comprising:
- receiving, by one or more computers comprising one or more processors, a request to terminate a first virtual machine instance;
- identifying, by the one or more computers, one or more storage devices associated with the first virtual machine instance;
- receiving, by the one or more computers from a virtual block device, a first dirtied block mapping associated with the one or more storage devices;
- determining, by the one or more computers, dirtied blocks of the one or more storage devices based at least in part on the first dirtied block mapping;
- wiping, by the one or more computers, the dirtied blocks of the one or more storage devices;
- receiving, by the one or more computers from a virtual block device, a second dirtied block mapping indicative of the wiped dirtied blocks of the one or more storage device;
- verifying, by the one or more computers, by comparing the first dirtied block mapping to the second dirtied block mapping, that the one or more storage devices are wiped;
- and
- associating, by the one or more computers, the one or more storage devices with a second virtual machine instance.

A system, comprising:
- at least one memory that stores computer-executable instructions;
- at least one processor configured to access the at least one memory, wherein the at least one processor is configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to:
- identify a storage device;
- track blocks of the storage device that are dirtied using a dirtied block mapping;
- determine dirtied blocks of the storage device based at least in part on the first dirtied block mapping;
- wipe the storage device;
- determine a second dirtied block mapping indicative of the wiped blocks of the storage device;
- and
- verify if the storage device is wiped by comparing the first dirtied block mapping to the second dirtied block mapping.
6 more elements
At least one non-transitory machine-readable medium comprising computer-executable instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, executes a method comprising:
- tracking dirtied blocks of a storage device;
- determining a first dirtied block mapping indicative of the tracked dirtied blocks of the storage device;
- wiping the storage device and tracking wiped blocks of the storage device;
- determining a second dirtied block mapping indicative of the tracked wiped blocks of the storage device;
- and
- verifying that the storage device is wiped based at least in part on comparing the first dirtied block mapping to the second dirtied block mapping.
3 more elements
A method, comprising:
- writing data to one or more blocks of a storage device;
- tracking the one or more blocks to which data is written on the storage device, wherein tracking the one or more blocks to which data is written comprises the virtual block device generating a first dirtied block mapping indicating the one or more blocks to which data is written;
- wiping the storage device;
- determining the wiped blocks of the storage device, wherein determining the wiped blocks comprises the virtual block device generating a second dirtied block mapping indicating the one or more blocks that were wiped;
- determining that the storage device is wiped by comparing the first dirtied block mapping to the second dirtied block mapping.
