Abstract
A diesel fuel composition comprising a performance enhancing additive, wherein the performance enhancing additive is the product of a Mannich reaction between: (a) an aldehyde; (b) a polyamine; and (c) an optionally substituted phenol; wherein the molar ratio of component (c) to component (b) in the reaction mixture used to prepare the performance enhancing additive is at least 1.5:1.

A method for improving the engine performance of a diesel engine with a high pressure fuel system comprising adding an additive to diesel fuel to form a diesel fuel composition, wherein the additive is the product of a Mannich reaction between:
- (a) an aldehyde;
- (b) a polyamine;
- and
- (c) an optionally substituted phenol;
- wherein the molar ratio of component (a) to component (b) in the reaction mixture used to prepare the additive is at least 1.67:1;
- and combusting said diesel fuel composition in said diesel engine.
A method for improving the engine performance of a diesel engine with a highpressure fuel system comprising adding an additive to diesel fuel to form a diesel fuel composition, wherein the additive is the product of a Mannich reaction between:
- (a) an aldehyde;
- (b) a polyamine;
- and
- (c) an optionally substituted phenol;
- wherein the molar ratio of component (a) to component (b) in the reaction mixture used to prepare the performance enhancing additive is from 2:0.8 to 2:1.2;
- and combusting said diesel fuel composition in said diesel engine.
