• R is H;
• C1 to C10 alkyl;
• C1 to C10 alkyl bearing at least one hydroxyl substituent;
• —(CH2)Ra, wherein Ra is C5 to C10 cycloalkyl;
• aryl;
• benzyl;
• —CH2CH2OR1, —CH(CH2OR1)2, —C(CH2OR1)3, or CH2CH2N(R1)2;
• R1 is H, C1 to C10 alkyl, —COR, or —CO2R;
• or, when R is —CH2CH2N(R1)2, each R1 can be taken together to form a morpholine ring;
• X is halogen, CN, OH, SH, ═CHR1;
• A is selected from the group consisting of:
• and
• L is C1-C6 alkylene wherein optionally at least one CH2 unit can be replaced with O or S.
