Abstract
The present disclosure relates to reactor components and their use, e.g., in regenerative reactors. A process and apparatus for utilizing different wetted areas along the flow path of a fluid in a pyrolysis reactor, e.g., a thermally regenerating reactor, such as a regenerative, reverse-flow reactor, is described.
Claims19
A hydrocarbon conversion method comprising:
- (a) introducing a first mixture comprising hydrocarbons to a regenerative reactor,
- (b) flowing the first mixture through a channeled reactor bed, the channeled reactor bed being located within the regenerative reactor, wherein
- (i) the channeled reactor bed includes first and second portions, the second portion being located downstream of the first portion with respect to the flow of first mixture;
- (ii) the first portion has a temperature in the range of about 325° C. to about 1125° C., a first plurality of flow passages for conducting the first mixture through the first portion, and a first wetted area av1;
- (iii) the second portion has a temperature in the range of about 1250° C. to 1615° C., a second plurality of flow passages for conducting the first mixture through the second portion, and a second wetted area av2;
- and
- (iv) the ratio of the second wetted area av2 to the first wetted area av1 is ≦0.75;
- (c) heating the first mixture in the first portion by transferring heat to the first mixture from the first portion at a first heat transfer rate to produce a heated first mixture;
- and
- (d) further heating the heated first mixture in the second portion by transferring heat to the heated first mixture from the second portion at a second heat transfer rate to react at least a portion of the heated first mixture's hydrocarbons within the second portion to produce a second mixture comprising C2 unsaturates, wherein the flow of first mixture across the channeled reactor bed has a pressure drop that is less than that of a substantially similar comparative first mixture flow through a substantially similar comparative channeled reactor bed having a ratio av2 to av1>0.75.
