Abstract
A modular cooling-heating system for use in the controlled delivery of temperature-controlled fluids to a heat exchanger associated with the blood of a patient undergoing a medical procedure is described, wherein the cooling-heating system uses adaptive temperature control protocols.
Claims20
A modular cooling-heating system for modifying a body temperature of a patient during a medical procedure, comprising:
- a first unit comprising at least one fluid reservoir and a pump configured to circulate a fluid to a heat exchanger spaced apart from the first unit and;
- a second unit operatively associated with the first unit and comprising a computer system including an adaptive temperature control software protocol for controlling the temperature of the fluid pumped to the heat exchanger;
- two or more heaters configured to selectively heat the fluid
- a cooling component comprising a valve and configured to selectively cool the fluid when the valve is opened and fluid passes through the cooling component;
- the adaptive temperature control software protocol configured to develop a temperature change factor based on at least two temperature measurements determined a set time apart of the fluid returning to the first unit, a heater turn off temperature based on the temperature change factor and a cooling component valve opening time based on the temperature change factor.

A modular medical patient cooling-heating system comprising:
- a fluid conditioning unit comprising at least one fluid reservoir, a fluid inlet port, a fluid outlet port;
- a first fluid temperature sensor, and a pump configured to circulate the fluid between at least the reservoir and a fluid heating component, a fluid cooling component, the inlet and the outlet;
- the heating component comprising at least one controllable heater configured to transfer thermal energy to the fluid to thereby selectively raise the temperature of the fluid exiting the fluid conditioning unit;
- the fluid cooling component comprising a valve and configured to transfer thermal energy from the fluid when the valve is opened to thereby selectively lower the temperature of the fluid exiting the fluid conditioning unit;
- and
- a control unit operatively coupled with the fluid conditioning unit and comprising a computer having an adaptive temperature control software protocol configured to receive data from at least the first temperature sensor, and configured to adjust the temperature of fluid exiting the outlet port based on a temperature change factor determined from running fluid temperature measurements made a set time apart.
