Adaptive asynchronous data replication in a data storage system

A system comprising:

• a plurality of storage zones, each storage zone comprising a plurality of nodes wherein each node comprises a plurality of storage devices and a controller, the controller including a processor and memory;
• a first node of a plurality of nodes included in a first zone of the plurality of zones, the first node having instructions which when executed cause a first processor included in a first controller in the first node to perform actions including:
• receiving a storage request that includes a data item reference and a storage policy identifier;
• evaluating a latency to each storage zone implicated by a storage policy associated with the storage policy identifier;
• evaluating node to node latency within each storage zone including updating a ping table;
• evaluating a backlog for each storage zone;
• calculating a replication synchronicity for the data item based on the node to node latency, the latency to each storage zone, and the storage policy in view of the backlog for the storage zone, the backlog threshold and the performance threshold.
