Abstract
A technique includes providing a source in a first well and a seismic receiver in a second well to detect a seismic event that is caused by the source. The technique includes referencing clocks in the source and receiver to a common reference time frame and determining a time in the reference time frame at which the seismic source generates the seismic event.
Claims15
A method of calibrating a seismic velocity model to characterize a subterranean region between a first well and a second well, comprising:
- providing a seismic velocity model;
- deploying a source in a first well and a seismic receiver in a second well at a known first location to detect a seismic event caused by the source, the seismic receiver having a downhole clock;
- providing a surface system having at least one surface clock;
- synchronizing the downhole clock and the at least one surface clock to a common reference time frame;
- commanding the source to initiate the seismic event;
- determining an initiation time in reference time frame at which the source initiated the seismic event in the first well;
- communicating seismic data indicative of an arrival time in reference time frame at which the seismic receiver detected the seismic event in the second well;
- referencing the detected arrival time in reference time frame with a predicted arrival time generated by the seismic velocity model;
- and
- using the detected arrival time in reference time frame and the initiation time in reference time frame as a constraint to calibrate the seismic velocity model.
