Abstract
An illuminated suction apparatus including a hand-held surgical device combining a high-performance non-fiber optic optical waveguide with suction. This device is useful in a wide array of surgical procedures including open and minimally invasive orthopedics.
Claims23
An illuminated medical device comprising:
- a non-fiber optic optical waveguide having a first index of refraction;
- an optical cladding disposed on at least a portion of the non-fiber optic optical waveguide, the optical cladding having a second index of refraction lower than the first to preserve total internal reflection of light passing through the non-fiber optic optical waveguide;
- a medical or surgical instrument coupled to the waveguide;
- a cradle having a channel sized to engage with the medical or surgical instrument;
- a portion of the waveguide forms a saddle having a concave inner surface that is shaped to match the outer surface of the surgical instrument.
