Abstract
Glutamine phenylpyruvate transaminase (GPT) proteins, nucleic acid molecules encoding GPT proteins, and uses thereof are disclosed. Provided herein are various GPT proteins and GPT gene coding sequences isolated from a number of plant species. As disclosed herein, GPT proteins share remarkable structural similarity within plant species, and are active in catalyzing the synthesis of 2-hydroxy-5-oxoproline (2-oxoglutaramate), a powerful signal metabolite which regulates the function of a large number of genes involved in the photosynthesis apparatus, carbon fixation and nitrogen metabolism.
Claims23
A nucleic acid construct comprising a heterologous plant promoter operably linked to an isolated polynucleotide having a sequence selected from the group consisting of (a) the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO:
- 45;
- (b) a nucleotide sequence having at least 90% identity to SEQ ID NO:
- 45, and encoding a polypeptide having glutamine phenylpyruvate transaminase (GPT) activity;
- (c) a nucleotide sequence encoding the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO:
- 46, or a polypeptide having at least 90% sequence identity thereto which has GPT activity;
- and, (d) a nucleotide sequence encoding the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO:
- 46 truncated at its amino terminus by between 30 to 56 amino acid residues, or a polypeptide having at least 90% sequence identity thereto which has GPT activity.
