Abstract
Systems, devices, and methods are presented that facilitate electronic manipulation and detection of submicron particles. Time-multiplexed dielectrophoresis can be employed by cycling between two or more disparate electric fields during separate portions of a duty cycle. By cycling between these two or more disparate electric fields, two or more disparate particle types can be separated from one another based on differences in electrical properties of the two or more disparate particle types.

A method for manipulating particles, comprising:
- applying a first voltage waveform having a first frequency to a first subset of electrodes;
- manipulating at least a portion of the particles in a buffer solution to facilitate trapping a first subset of particles in a region near the first subset of electrodes based at least in part on the respective physical properties of the particles and the first frequency;
- applying at least one other voltage waveform having at least one other frequency to at least one other subset of electrodes;
- manipulating at least the portion of the particles in the buffer solution to facilitate trapping at least one other subset of particles in a region near the at least one other subset of electrodes based at least in part on the respective physical properties of particles and the at least one other frequency, wherein disparate voltage waveforms having respective frequencies are sequentially applied, in at least one of a spatial sequence or a temporal sequence, to facilitate separation of disparate types of particles to form a defined pattern;
- and
- arranging the at least one other subset of particles to form at least one other grouping based at least in part on the at least one other frequency, wherein the first grouping and the at least one other grouping are arranged in the form of the defined pattern;
- and wherein the defined pattern is a diffraction grating, comprising one or more substantially parallel lines of particles from the first grouping, and one or more other substantially parallel lines of particles from the at least one other grouping to facilitate detection of respective particles.
A method for manipulating particles, comprising:
- applying a first voltage waveform having a first frequency to a first subset of electrodes;
- manipulating at least a portion of the particles in a buffer solution to facilitate trapping a first subset of particles in a region near the first subset of electrodes based at least in part on the respective physical properties of the particles and the first frequency;
- applying at least one other voltage waveform having at least one other frequency to at least one other subset of electrodes;
- and
- manipulating at least the portion of the particles in the buffer solution to facilitate trapping at least one other subset of particles in a region near the at least one other subset of electrodes based at least in part on the respective physical properties of particles and the at least one other frequency, wherein disparate voltage waveforms having respective frequencies are sequentially applied, in at least one of a spatial sequence or a temporal sequence, to facilitate separation of disparate types of particles to form a defined pattern;
- and wherein disparate voltage waveforms having respective frequencies are sequentially applied in the temporal sequence to facilitate time-multiplexed dielectrophoresis (DEP), and wherein the temporal sequence alternates between the first frequency and the at least one other frequency.
A method of separating two or more disparate particle types of interest, comprising:
- receiving a fluid medium comprising the two or more disparate particle types of interest;
- and
- separating at least a first particle type of the two or more disparate particle types of interest from at least a second particle type of the two or more disparate particle types of interest via applying of two or more electric fields to the two or more disparate particle types of interest during each of a plurality of duty cycles, wherein each duty cycle comprises:
- applying a first electric field for a first portion of each duty cycle to move the two or more disparate particle types of interest in a first direction, wherein a first particle type of the two or more disparate particle types of interest has a first velocity, and wherein a second particle type of the two or more disparate particle types of interest has a second velocity different from the first velocity;
- and
- applying a second electric field for a second portion of each duty cycle to move the two or more disparate particle types of interest in a second direction different from the first direction, wherein the first particle type has a third velocity, and wherein the second particle type has a fourth velocity different from the third velocity.
