Light diffusing optical fibers and light emitting apparatuses including light diffusing optical fibers

A light emitting apparatus comprising:

• a base;
• a transparent or translucent enclosure affixed to the base;
• a light diffusing optical fiber comprising a coiled filament enclosed within the enclosure, wherein:
• the coiled filament comprises a glass core, an outer surface, and a plurality of light scattering structures situated within the coiled filament for scattering light through the outer surface of the coiled filament;
• the coiled filament has a loss in a range of 0.5 dB/turn to 10.0 dB/turn at a turn radius of less than 50 mm, and the light optical fiber has a baseline loss in the range from 0.02 dB/m to 1 dB/m due to scattering induced by the plurality of light scattering structures;
• and
• a light source at least partially enclosed by the base, wherein the light source is optically coupled to the light diffusing optical fiber, such that at least a portion of light emitted by the light source enters the light diffusing optical fiber and is scattered away from the glass core and through the outer surface of the coiled filament by the plurality of light scattering structures.
