Abstract
A multi-layer golf ball includes a core having an outer surface, an intermediate layer surrounding the core, and a cover layer surrounding the intermediate layer, which defines an outermost portion of the ball. The outer surface of the core includes a plurality of polygonal protrusions aligned on a common sphere and a plurality of grooves that extend radially inward from the sphere and respectively separate and define each of the polygonal protrusions. The intermediate layer has a radially inward facing surface that is bonded to the outer surface of the core across the entire outer surface.
Claims19
A multi-layer golf ball comprising:
- a core having an outer surface that includes:
- a plurality of polygonal protrusions, each having a respective land area aligned on a common sphere;
- wherein the polygonal protrusions define a plurality of grooves therebetween that extend radially inward from the sphere;
- wherein the plurality of polygonal protrusions includes a plurality of triangular protrusions and a plurality of non-triangular protrusions;
- wherein the plurality of non-triangular protrusions and the plurality of triangular protrusions are arranged relative to each other such that one of the plurality of triangular protrusions abuts at least one side of at least one of the plurality of non-triangular protrusions;
- an intermediate layer surrounding the core and having a radially inward surface that is bonded to the outer surface of the core across the entire outer surface;
- and
- a cover layer surrounding the intermediate layer and defining an outermost portion of ball.
A multi-layer golf ball comprising:
- a core having an outer surface that includes:
- a plurality of polygonal protrusions, each having a respective land area aligned on a common sphere, each of the plurality of polygonal protrusions having four or more sides;
- a plurality of triangular protrusions, each having a respective land area aligned on the common sphere;
- wherein the plurality of polygonal protrusions and plurality of triangular protrusions define a plurality of grooves that extend radially inward from the sphere;
- and
- wherein the plurality of polygonal protrusions and plurality of triangular protrusions are arranged such that at least one of the polygonal protrusions is abutted on each side by a respective triangular protrusion;
- an intermediate layer surrounding the core and having a radially inward surface that is bonded to the outer surface of the core across the entire outer surface;
- a cover layer surrounding the intermediate layer and defining an outermost portion of the ball.
