Abstract
This invention relates to extracts and refined fractions of a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Alpinia officinarum (AO), components thereof, and the use of such compounds and compositions to treat neurodegenerative or neuropathological conditions or to inhibit aggregation of a-synuclein.

A method of treating a synucleinopathy in a subject, the method comprising administering to a subject a compound of Formula 1:
- or a salt thereof, wherein
- R1 and R2 are both H or together form a bond;
- R3 and R4 are independently H or a C1-C8 alkoxy;
- and
- R5 is a C1-C8 alkoxy;
- or a compound of Formula 1.3:
- or a salt thereof;
- or a combination thereof,
- wherein the synucleinopathy is Parkinson's disease (PD).
A method of inhibiting aggregation of α-synuclein in a subject, the method comprising administering to a subject a compound of Formula 1:
- or a salt thereof, wherein
- R1 and R2 are both H or together form a bond;
- R3 and R4 are independently H or a C1-C8 alkoxy;
- and
- R5 is a C1-C8 alkoxy;
- or a compound of Formula 1.3:
- or a salt thereof;
- or a combination thereof.
