Abstract
An illuminated medical system comprises a medical instrument and a light transmitting waveguide. The waveguide projects lights from a distal portion of the waveguide toward a target area. The waveguide is formed primarily of a cyclic olefin copolymer or a cyclic olefin polymer.
Claims39
An illuminated medical system comprising:
- a medical instrument;
- and
- a light transmitting waveguide having an inner surface, an outer surface, a proximal region and a distal region, the waveguide coupled to the medical instrument, wherein the waveguide is configured to conduct light from the proximal region to the distal region thereof, and the waveguide projects the light from the distal region toward a target area, and
- wherein the waveguide comprises a plurality of zones on the inner surface or on the outer surface, and a plurality of facets disposed in each of the plurality of zones, the plurality of facets in a first zone having a different shape than the plurality of facets in a second zone, the plurality of facets extracting the light from the waveguide and directing the extracted light to a surgical field, and wherein the plurality of facets are integrally formed with the waveguide, and
- wherein the waveguide is rigid and consists essentially of a cyclic olefin copolymer or a cyclic olefin polymer.
2 more elements
An illuminated medical system comprising:
- a medical instrument;
- and
- a rigid light transmitting illuminator having an inner surface, an outer surface, a proximal region and a distal region, the illuminator coupled to the medical instrument,
- wherein the illuminator is configured to conduct light from the proximal region to the distal region thereof, and the illuminator comprises a light input portion, a light conducting portion, and a light output portion,
- wherein the light output portion comprises a plurality of zones on the inner surface or on the outer surface, and a plurality of facets disposed in each of the plurality of zones, the plurality of facets in a first zone having a different shape than the plurality of facets in a second zone, the plurality of facets extracting the light from the waveguide and directing the extracted light to a target area, and wherein the plurality of facets are integrally formed with the illuminator,
- wherein the light output portion projects the light from the distal region of the illuminator towards the target area, and
- wherein the light conducting portion consists essentially of a cyclic olefin copolymer or a cyclic olefin polymer.
4 more elements
A method for illuminating a medical work space, said method comprising:
- providing a medical instrument coupled to a light transmitting waveguide, the waveguide having an inner surface and an outer surface;
- advancing the medical instrument and the waveguide toward the work space;
- illuminating the work space with light from at least one of the inner and outer surfaces of the waveguide, wherein the waveguide comprises a plurality of zones on the inner surface or on the outer surface, and a plurality of facets disposed in each of the plurality of zones, the plurality of facets in a first zone having a different shape than the plurality of facets in a second zone, the plurality of facets extracting the light from the waveguide and directing the extracted light to the medical work space, and wherein the plurality of facets are integrally formed with the waveguide, and wherein the light passes from a proximal portion of the waveguide to a distal portion of the waveguide, and wherein the waveguide is rigid and consists essentially of a cyclic olefin copolymer or a cyclic olefin polymer.
