Abstract
A method for copy protection in which an audiovisual or audio data is divided into a plurality of portions. The plurality of portions is at least partly scrambled and prepared so as to be stored on a record carrier in the scrambled order. This is done so that a physical position on the record carrier, e.g., a sector of the record carrier, where a respective portions of the divided data is stored depends on the scrambled order.
Claims17
A method for copy protection of an optical record carrier that includes content that has been encrypted using a predetermined encryption method, comprising:
- selecting program instructions stored on the optical record carrier, wherein the selected program instructions cause a playback device to
- check whether encryption characteristics relating to the predetermined encryption method are present on the optical record carrier,
- prevent playback of the content when the encryption characteristics are not present,
- a second step to when the encryption characteristics are present, verify an integrity of the encryption characteristics,
- wherein the program instructions stored on the optical record carrier initiate playback by the playback device of genuine audiovisual or audio content stored on the optical record carrier in genuine quality only if the integrity of the encryption characteristics is verified, the program instructions initiating a reduced-quality playback of the audiovisual or audio content when the integrity of the encryption characteristics cannot be verified, the reduced-quality playback being one of distorted with respect to genuine quality playback or missing content portions as compared to the genuine quality playback.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium copy encoded with computer-readable instructions thereon, the computer-readable instructions when executed by a playback device cause the playback device to perform a method, comprising:
- checking, in the playback device, if encryption characteristics are present on the computer-readable medium copy;
- preventing genuine quality playback of audiovisual or audio content by the playback device when the encryption characteristics are not present on the computer-readable medium copy;
- when the encryption characteristics are present on the computer-readable medium copy, determining, in the playback device, whether the encryption characteristics are corrupted based on an integrity check;
- preventing the genuine quality playback of audiovisual or audio content by the playback device when the encryption characteristics are determined to be corrupted;
- and
- causing a reduced-quality playback of the audiovisual or audio content when genuine quality playback is prevented, the reduced-quality playback being one of distorted with respect to genuine quality playback or missing content portions as compared to the genuine quality playback,
- wherein the audiovisual or audio content are stored in the computer-readable medium copy and are not copy protected, and wherein the computer-readable medium copy does not comprise encryption characteristics of a standard used to copy protect an original computer-readable medium or the computer-readable medium copy comprises corrupted encryption characteristics.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium encoded with computer-readable instructions thereon, the computer-readable instructions when executed by a playback device cause the playback device to perform a method, comprising:
- checking that encryption characteristics are present on the computer-readable medium;
- preventing genuine quality playback of audiovisual or audio content by the playback device when the encryption characteristics are not present on the computer-readable medium copy;
- when the encryption characteristics are present in the computer-readable medium, performing an integrity check of the encryption characteristics, wherein the encryption characteristics at least partly depend on the audiovisual or audio content and have been determined in accordance with an encryption standard for copy protection of the audiovisual or audio content at the time of manufacturing the computer-readable medium;
- playing back the audiovisual or audio content in genuine quality only if the integrity check of the encryption characteristics determines that the encryption characteristics are not corrupted;
- and
- causing a reduced-quality playback of the audiovisual or audio content when the encryption characteristics are determined to be corrupted, the reduced-quality playback being one of distorted with respect to genuine quality playback or missing content portions as compared to the genuine quality playback,
- wherein the audiovisual or audio content that is copy protected according to the encryption standard used for copy protection of the computer-readable medium is stored in the computer-readable medium, and the encryption characteristics of the encryption standard are stored in the computer-readable medium.
