Abstract
A novel approach for generating FLC electro-optics with gray-scale resolution includes using FLC material that is: (i.) capable of electrostatic V-shape switching, (ii.) capable of optical latching, and (iii.) not requiring DC balance.
Claims11
A material formed of molecules capable of demonstrating ferroelectric phase behavior in liquid crystal form, comprising molecules of the formula:
- wherein R1 is selected from the group consisting of O—R1a—R1b wherein
- R1a is (CH2)n with n being an integer from 1to 15;
- R1b is (Si(R1)2)q—Si(R1)3 where R1 is alkyl, and q is an integer from zero to three;
- and
- R2 is selected from the group consisting of C≡N, NO2;
- O—CF3, and C4F9O—C2F4O—CF2CH2O.
