Ad extensions on content network

A system comprising:

• a processing circuit configured to:
• receive, over a network, display data representing a plurality of advertisements including a selected advertisement and a user interface feature for the selected advertisement;
• interact with an expandable Application Programming Interface (API) to render, with content of a received content page, an inline frame having a first size and comprising an advertisement slot for displaying the plurality of advertisements;
• render the each of the plurality of advertisements in the advertisement slot of the inline frame, the user interface feature rendered with, and separate from, the selected advertisement;
• display the inline frame including the selected advertisement to a user on a display;
• receive, over the network, display data representing additional information related with the selected advertisement;
• receive an input, via the user interface feature rendered with and separate from the selected advertisement, to activate an ad extension for the additional information;
• interact with the expandable API responsive to the received input to expand the inline frame to a second size while displaying the plurality of advertisements in a first space of the inline frame and render the expanded inline frame in the content page, the expanded inline frame expanded horizontally based on a vertical orientation of the advertisement slot, the expanded inline frame including a second space separate from the displayed plurality of advertisements;
• render, in the second space of the expanded inline frame adjacent to the first space, the additional information related with the advertisement;
• and
• display the expanded inline frame including the plurality of advertisements including the selected advertisement and the additional such that the displayed expanded inline frame covers a portion of the content on the content page.

A method of providing an ad extension for an advertisement on a content network, the ad extension comprising additional information related to the advertisement, the method comprising:

• selecting the advertisement for display with a plurality of advertisements from a plurality of advertisements stored in an advertisement server, the selected advertisement associated with additional information for an ad extension;
• transmitting, over a network, display data representing the plurality of advertisements to a browser in a user device and a user interface feature for the selected advertisement, wherein the browser:
• interacts with an expandable Application Programming Interface (API) of the user device to render, with content of a content page, an inline frame having a first size and comprising a plurality of advertisement slots;
• renders each of the plurality of advertisements in a corresponding advertisement slot of the inline frame, the user interface feature rendered with, and separate from, the selected advertisement in one of the plurality of advertisement slots;
• and
• displays the inline frame including the plurality of advertisements that include the user interface feature rendered with the selected advertisement to a user on a display associated with the user device;
• and
• transmitting, over the network, display data representing the additional information associated with the advertisement to the browser in the user device, wherein the browser:
• receives an input, via the user interface feature rendered with and separate from the selected advertisement, to activate the ad extension from the user;
• in response to the input, interacts with the expandable API to expand the inline frame to a second size while displaying the plurality of advertisements in a first space of the inline frame and renders the expanded inline frame in the content page, the expanded inline frame expanded vertically based on a horizontal orientation of the plurality of advertisements, the expanded inline frame including a second space separate from the displayed plurality of advertisements;
• renders, in a panel of the second space of the expanded inline frame adjacent to the first space, the additional information associated with the advertisement, the panel having an area less than an area of the second space;
• renders a border around the selected advertisement of the plurality of displayed advertisements in the first space of the expanded inline frame and the additional information rendered in the panel of the second space of the expanded inline frame;
• displays the expanded inline frame including the plurality of advertisements including the selected advertisement and the additional information to the user on the display associated with the user device such that the displayed expanded inline frame covers a portion of the content on the content page;
• receives a click on a portion of the second space of the expanded inline frame, the portion separate from the rendered additional information;
• and
• interacts with the expandable API to collapse the inline frame to the first size in response to the click on the portion while displaying the plurality of advertisements in the first space of the inline frame.
