Abstract
A plastic mirror that includes a plastic substrate having a front surface, a hardcoating on the front surface, a reflective layer, and an intermediate zone between the hardcoating and the reflective layer, the intermediate zone including at least one layer formed from a material selected from the group consisting of metals and metalloids, oxides and nitrides of metals and metalloids, and carbon.
Claims61
A plastic mirror comprising a plastic substrate having a front surface, a hardcoating on the front surface, a reflective layer having a reflectance of greater than 50%, and an intermediate zone between the hardcoating and the reflective layer, the intermediate zone including at least one layer formed from a material selected from the group consisting of metals and metalloids, oxides and nitrides of metals and metalloids, and carbon.
A method of manufacturing a plastic mirror, the method including the steps of:
- forming a plastic substrate having a front surface;
- coating one or more abrasion resistant layers onto the front surface of the plastic substrate to form a hardcoating;
- forming an intermediate zone on the hardcoating, including coating at least one layer thereon of a material selected from the group consisting of metals and metalloids, oxides, and nitrides of metals and metalloids and carbon;
- and
- coating a reflective layer having a reflectance of greater than 50% onto the intermediate zone to form the plastic mirror.
