System and method for managing pain

A method for managing pain comprising:

• with an electrode array coupled to a control module, transmitting a TENS treatment, characterized by a first set of stimulus parameters, to a user at a region of the body of the user defined by a housing coupled to the electrode array;
• at a vibration sensor, measuring skin vibrations characterizing a measured muscle twitch signal induced by the TENS treatment;
• using a first surface area and a second surface area of an electrode of the electrode array, detecting a measured impedance indicative of differential uncoupling of the first surface area and the second surface area from the body of the user;
• at the control module, receiving the measured muscle twitch signal and the measured impedance;
• and
• at the control module, automatically modulating a stimulus parameter of the first set of stimulus parameters, based upon at least one of the measured muscle twitch signal and the measured impedance.

A system for managing pain, comprising:

• an electrode array configured to transmit a nerve stimulation treatment to a user;
• and
• a housing coupled to the electrode array, wherein the housing interfaces with the user and includes:
• a muscle twitch sensor subsystem, comprising a sensor that measures skin parameters to determine a muscle twitch signal from the user in response to the nerve stimulation treatment;
• and
• an electronics subsystem, comprising a power module, a pulse generator that generates the nerve stimulation treatment, and a control module that receives the muscle twitch signal and automatically controls the nerve stimulation treatment until a threshold is satisfied to manage pain of the user.
