Cotyle comprising a sterile interface

Method of producing an ex-vivo prosthetic hip cotyle assembly, comprising the steps of:

• a) providing a metal insertion shell having a concave receiving face and a peripheral receiving structure, the concave receiving face comprising a conical surface,
• b) providing a ceramic final joint insert, distinct from and being manufactured separately from the insertion shell, having an exterior face comprising a conical surface and an interior receiving face comprising a concave joint surface,
• c) engaging the exterior face of the ceramic final joint insert in the concave receiving face of the insertion shell, so that said respective conical surfaces of the insertion shell and of the ceramic final joint insert bear upon each other and fix the ceramic joint insert relative to the insertion cup,
• c1) removably fixing to the peripheral receiving structure of the insertion shell a placement and orientation insert having an assembly structure to which an impacter can be removably fixed,
• d) sterilizing the combination thus formed in a microbial protection envelope
• to obtain an ex-vivo prosthetic hip cotyle assembly allowing a simultaneous impaction of the metal insertion shell and of the ceramic fixed final joint insert in the pelvis of the patient.

Surgical method comprising the steps of:

• a) providing an ex-vivo prosthetic hip cotyle assembly comprising a metal insertion shell having a concave receiving face in which is previously ex-vivo engaged a ceramic fixed final joint insert having an interior receiving face comprising a concave joint surface, and comprising a placement and orientation insert, having an assembly structure to which an impacter can be removably fixed, which is fixed to a peripheral receiving structure of the insertion shell, said ex-vivo prosthetic hip cotyle assembly being sterile and contained in a microbial protection envelope,
• b) opening the sealed envelope in the operating room,
• c) fixing an impacter to the placement and orientation insert of the ex-vivo prosthetic hip cotyle assembly,
• d) engaging the ex-vivo prosthetic hip cotyle assembly in the cotyle cavity in the bone,
• e) impacting the ex-vivo prosthetic hip cotyle assembly to fix it to the bone, thereby achieving a simultaneous impaction of the metal insertion shell and of the ceramic fixed final joint insert in the pelvis of the patient.
