Abstract
A spinal implant for treating lumbar spinal stenosis or as an adjunct to spinal fusion. The implant includes a body portion having an interior cavity. A plurality of locking wings are adapted and configured to move between a stowed position retracted within the interior cavity of the body portion and a deployed position extended from the interior cavity of the body portion. In the deployed position, the wings fix the implant in a selected interspinous space. A cable and wheel arrangement moves the plurality of locking wings from the stowed position to the deployed position and a ratchet/pawl assembly prevents backward movement of the wings.
Claims18
A spinal implant assembly for filling an interspinous process space to act as a spacer between bone comprising:
- a) a body portion dimensioned and configured for percutaneous introduction into the interspinous process space to act as a spacer between the bone, the body portion having an exterior surface defining opposing depressions to match a profile of the bone and defining an enclosed interior cavity;
- and
- b) a plurality of curved locking wings each adapted and configured to move along a respective curved path between a stowed position retracted within the enclosed interior cavity of the body portion and a deployed position extended outward from the enclosed interior cavity of the body portion through respective openings formed in the body portion, wherein a pawl is located on the exterior surface of the body portion adjacent each opening in the body portion and each locking wing includes ratchet teeth for engaging the respective pawl to prevent the locking wings from moving back into the enclosed interior cavity of the body portion when deployed,
- wherein after deployment of the locking wings, the locking wings and the opposing depressions secure the body portion in an intersinous space defined by a pair of adjacent spinous process, such that each spinous process has the profile to complimentarily match the respective depression of the body portion,
- wherein the exterior surface of the body portion is smooth so that the spinous processes are not damaged during insertion of the body portion between the spinous process.
A spinal implant comprising:
- a) an elongated body portion having an interior cavity and defining a longitudinal axis and an axial plane that intersects the longitudinal axis;
- b) a first pair of deployable curved locking wings supported in the interior cavity of the body portion, each curved locking wing of said first pair adapted and configured to move along a respective curved path from a stowed position to a deployed position within a first deployment plane that extends parallel to the axial plane of the body portion;
- and
- c) a second pair of deployable curved locking wings supported in the interior cavity of the body portion, each curved locking wing of said second pair adapted and configured to move along a respective curved path from a stowed position to a deployed position within a second deployment plane that extends parallel to the axial plane of the body portion and is spaced apart from the first deployment plane, wherein the first deployment plane is parallel with the second deployment plane.
A spinal implant for insertion into an interspinous process space between bone comprising:
- a) a body portion dimensioned and configured for percutaneous introduction into the interspinous process space to act as a spacer between the bone, the body portion having an exterior surface and defining an enclosed interior cavity;
- b) at least two curved locking wings, each locking wing with a distal end for engaging the bone and a proximal end having a bearing surface, each wing adapted and configured to move along a respective curved path between a stowed position retracted within the enclosed interior cavity of the body portion and a deployed position extended outward from the enclosed interior cavity of the body portion through respective openings formed in the body portion, wherein a pawl is located on the exterior surface of the body portion adjacent each opening in the body portion and each locking wing includes ratchet teeth for engaging the respective pawl to prevent the wings from moving back into the enclosed interior cavity of the body portion when deployed, wherein the locking wings are adapted and configured to fix the implant in a selected interspinous space when deployed;
- and
- c) a deployment assembly for moving each locking wing from the stowed position to the deployed position, the deployment assembly including at least one locking wheel, the at least one locking wheel having a central portion and opposing levers extending from the central portion to terminate in distal ends, wherein the central portion defines a central opening, the central portion being mounted with the central opening on a hub for rotation about the hub, the hub being mounted in the interior so that when the at least one locking wheel is rotated about the hub, the distal ends each exert a force against the bearing surface of the respective locking wing for deploying the locking wings.
