Optical correction for high uniformity panel lights

A method of configuring a display having (A) a spatial light modulator having addressable pixels and an optical characteristic that is spatially non-uniform and (B) a backlight system having a light source and configured to produce, based on light produced by the light source, a light output that is spatially non-uniform in at least one among luminance and color and configured to partially compensate for said spatially non-uniform optical characteristic of said spatial light modulator, the method comprising:

• measuring an output for different pixels of the spatial light modulator with the backlight system not having the intentionally non-uniform light output;
• determining a pattern for the intentionally non-uniform light output of the backlight system to at least partially compensate for the non-uniformity of the spatial light modulator in agreement with the measurements;
• for each of a plurality of pixels of the spatial light modulator, determining an amount to alter a corresponding pixel value of an image signal to partially compensate for the non-uniformity of the spatial light modulator;
• altering the backlight system according to the determined pattern;
• and
• configuring an electronic precompensation for the display,
• wherein said spatial light modulator is arranged in an optical path of said light produced by the light source, and
• wherein said display includes an optical filter arranged in the optical path of said light produced by the light source and configured to alter at least one among luminance and color to partially compensate for the spatially non-uniform optical characteristic of the spatial light modulator.

A display comprising:

• a spatial light modulator configured to dynamically control a luminance of each of a plurality of addressable pixels according to an input signal and having a non-uniform spatial optical characteristic;
• a backlight system having a light source and configured to produce, based on light produced by the light source, a light output that is intentionally non-uniform to alter at least one among luminance and color to compensate at least partially for the non-uniform spatial optical characteristic;
• and
• an electronic signal processing element configured to carry out a precompensation of the input signal based on said non-uniform spatial optical characteristic of said spatial light modulator,
• wherein said spatial light modulator is arranged in an optical path of said light produced by the light source, and
• wherein said display includes an optical filter arranged in the optical path of said light produced by the light source and configured to alter at least one among luminance and color to partially compensate for the spatially non-uniform optical characteristic of the spatial light modulator.

A display including a plurality of addressable pixels, said display comprising:

• a spatial light modulator configured to addressably control a luminance of each of said plurality of addressable pixels according to an input signal and having a non-uniform spatial optical characteristic;
• an optical filter having a spatial pattern configured to alter at least one among luminance and color to compensate at least partially for said non-uniform spatial optical characteristic over a first range of spatial frequencies;
• and
• an electronic signal processing element arranged to apply, to the input signal, a partial precompensation for said non-uniform spatial optical characteristic,
• wherein said partial precompensation is predominantly of spatial frequencies higher than said first range of spatial frequencies.
