Abstract
Methods and systems for the production of one or more lipid products from a gaseous substrate using a two stage fermentation process are provided. The method comprises providing a gaseous substrate comprising CO2 and H2 to a primary bioreactor containing a culture or one or more microorganisms, and fermenting the substrate to produce an acid such as acetate. The acid, e.g. acetate from the primary bioreactor is then provided to a secondary bioreactor, where it is used as a substrate for fermentation to lipids by one or more yeasts.
Claims20
A method for producing lipids from a gaseous stream, the method comprising;
- a. flowing a substrate comprising C02 and H2 into a primary bioreactor comprising a culture of Acetobacterium woodii;
- b. anaerobically fermenting the substrate to produce a fermentation broth comprising at least one acid;
- c. flowing at least a portion of the fermentation broth to a secondary bioreactor comprising a culture of one or more oleaginous yeasts;
- and
- d. fermenting the at least one acid present in the fermentation broth to produce at least one lipid;
- wherein the one or more oleaginous yeast are selected from the group comprising Candida, Lipomyces, Rhodosporidium, Rhodotorula, Saccharomyces, Yarrowia and Cryptococcus.
