Abstract
A bone fixation implant is provided that includes a bone fixation plate and a plurality of fasteners. The bone fixation plate corresponds generally to stress lines imparted onto the mandible during anatomical function of the mandible. Thus, the bone fixation plate includes a primary leg and an auxiliary leg extending obliquely out from the primary leg.

A mandibular bone fixation plate configured to be fixed to a mandible, the mandibular bone fixation plate comprising:
- a primary leg that is substantially straight such that the primary leg generally corresponds in shape to a posterior border of a mandible;
- and
- an auxiliary leg extending obliquely out from the primary leg, the auxiliary leg including an auxiliary inner side wall that faces the primary leg, and an auxiliary outer side wall that is opposite the inner side wall, the auxiliary leg being elongate along a substantially curved central axis that is concave with respect to the auxiliary outer side wall, such that the auxiliary leg is curved and generally corresponds in shape to a sigmoid notch of the mandible, the substantially curved central axis defining a radius of curvature between about 10 mm and about 30 mm.
A kit including a plurality of bone fixation plates, each bone fixation plate comprising:
- a primary leg having a proximal end, an opposed distal end, and a middle region extending between the proximal and distal ends, the middle region configured to extend over a fracture site when the fixation plate is attached to an underlying bone;
- and
- an auxiliary leg that includes an auxiliary inner side wall that faces the primary leg, and an auxiliary outer side wall opposite the auxiliary inner side wall, the auxiliary leg is elongate along a substantially curved central axis, the auxiliary leg extending obliquely out from the primary leg;
- wherein the primary leg is substantially straight, such that the primary leg generally corresponds in shape to a posterior border of a mandible, and the substantially curved central axis of the auxiliary leg is concave with respect to the auxiliary outer side wall such that the substantially curved central axis generally corresponds in shape to a sigmoid notch of the mandible, the substantially curved central axis defining a radius of curvature between about 10 mm and about 30 mm.
A mandibular bone fixation plate configured to be fixed to a mandible, the mandibular bone fixation plate comprising:
- a primary leg defining a proximal portion, a distal portion spaced from the proximal portion in a distal direction, and a middle region that extends from the proximal portion to the distal portion, the primary leg further defining a first bone fixation aperture and a second bone fixation aperture spaced from the first bone fixation aperture in the distal direction, the first and second bone fixation apertures each positioned within the proximal portion, the primary leg defining a third bone fixation aperture and a fourth bone fixation aperture spaced from the third bone fixation aperture in the distal direction, the third and fourth bone fixation apertures each positioned within the distal portion, such that the middle region is positioned between the second and third bone fixation apertures and is devoid of any bone fixation apertures, the primary leg including a primary inner side wall and a primary outer side wall that is opposite the primary inner side wall;
- and
- an auxiliary leg including an auxiliary inner side wall that faces the primary inner side wall, and an auxiliary outer side wall opposite the auxiliary inner side wall, the auxiliary leg extending out from the primary leg such that the primary and auxiliary inner walls intersect in the middle region of the primary leg, the auxiliary leg being elongate along a substantially curved central axis, the substantially curved central axis being concave with respect to the auxiliary outer side wall, such that the auxiliary leg is curved and generally corresponds in shape to a sigmoid notch of the mandible.
A mandibular bone fixation plate configured to be fixed to a mandible, the mandibular bone fixation plate comprising:
- a primary leg that is elongate along a primary central axis, the primary leg defining a proximal portion, a distal portion spaced from the proximal portion along the primary central axis in a distal direction, and a middle region that extends from the proximal portion to the distal portion, the primary leg including an inner side wall and an outer side wall opposite the inner side wall, the primary leg further defining first and second bone fixation apertures positioned within the proximal portion, such that the second aperture is spaced from the first aperture along the distal direction, and the primary leg further defining at least one bone fixation aperture that extends through the distal portion, and the middle region devoid of any bone fixation apertures along the length;
- an auxiliary leg that extends obliquely out from the inner side wall of the primary leg at a location in the middle region, the auxiliary leg being elongate along a substantially curved auxiliary central axis, the substantially curved central axis being convex with respect to the inner side wall such that the auxiliary leg is curved and generally corresponds in shape to a sigmoid notch of the mandible;
- and
- a gap defined between the primary leg and the auxiliary leg, the gap defining a width measured in a direction perpendicular to the primary central axis, wherein the width of the gap at a first position is less than the width of the gap at a second position that is spaced from the first position in the distal direction.
