Abstract
A powder containing a polyoxymethylene polymer for coating metallic substrates is described. The polymeric particles are made from a polymeric composition containing a polyoxymethylene polymer having functional terminal groups. The polyoxymethylene polymer is blended with at least one functional additive. The functional additive can decrease the stiffness of the polyoxymethylene polymer, can decrease the shrinkage properties of the polyoxymethylene polymer and/or increase adhesion of the polymer to metal surfaces.
Claims21
A powder well suited for powder coating metallic substrates comprising:
- polymeric particles having a particle size distribution such that at least about 80% of the particles have a particle size of from about 25 microns to about 300 microns, the polymeric particles comprising:
- (a) a polyoxymethylene polymer in which at least 50% of the terminal groups are hydroxyl groups;
- (b) a functional additive for decreasing stiffness, the functional additive being present in the polymeric particles in the amount of from about 5% by weight to about 50% by weight, the functional additive comprising, a polyamide 11 polymer obtained by condensation of 11-aminoundecanoic acid or lactam-11, a polyamide 12 polymer obtained by condensation of 12-aminododecanoic acid or lactam-12, a polyamide terpolymer, a polyamide copolymer comprising a polycondensation product of a polymeric fatty acid with an aliphatic diamine, or mixtures thereof;
- and
- optionally a coupling agent for coupling the polyoxymethylene polymer to the functional additive.
