Abstract
Biometric monitoring devices, including various technologies that may be implemented in such devices, are discussed herein. Additionally, techniques, systems, and apparatuses are discussed herein for providing power-conserving techniques and systems for efficiently utilizing a GPS receiver are described. The positional fix frequency of the GPS receiver may, according to some implementations, be modified or adjusted between various levels according to data from one or more non-GPS sensors. Such non-GPS sensors may include, for example, ambient light intensity or spectrum sensors, accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers, heart rate sensors, galvanic skin response sensors, infrared sensors, etc.
Claims12
An apparatus comprising:
- a controller including at least one processor and a non-transitory memory;
- a global positioning system (GPS) receiver;
- and
- at least one non-GPS sensor, the at least one non-GPS sensor including one or more sensors selected from the group consisting of photoplethysmographic sensors, electrocardiographic sensors, electromyographics sensors, galvanic skin response sensors, body fat measurement sensors, and bioimpedance sensors, wherein:
- the at least one processor, the non-transitory memory, the GPS receiver, and the at least one non-GPS sensor are communicatively connected, and
- the non-transitory memory stores computer-executable instructions for controlling the at least one processor to:
- (a) receive, from the at least one non-GPS sensor, data which a body characteristic of a person wearing the apparatus can be measured,
- (b) determine whether the data indicates that the apparatus is being worn by a person based at least in part on an analysis of the data, and
- (c) set the frequency with which the GPS receiver obtains positional fixes based at least in part on the analysis of the data, including:
- set the frequency with which the GPS receiver obtains positional fixes at a first level responsive, at least in part, to a determination that the apparatus is being worn by a person, and
- set the frequency with which the GPS receiver obtains positional fixes at a second level, which is lower than the first level, responsive, at least in part, to a determination that the apparatus is not being worn by a person.
A method comprising:
- (a) receiving first data, from at least one non-GPS sensor at a first time, from which a body characteristic of a person wearing an apparatus can be measured, wherein the at least one non-GPS sensor includes one or more sensors selected from the group consisting of photoplethysmographic sensors, electrocardiographic sensors, electromyographics sensors, galvanic skin response sensors, body fat measurement sensors, and bioimpedance sensors;
- (b) receiving second data, from the at least one non-GPS sensor at a second time, from which the body characteristic of a person wearing the apparatus can be measured;
- (c) determining the first data indicates that the apparatus is being worn by a person based at least on an analysis of the first data;
- (d) determining the second data indicates that the apparatus is being worn by a person based at least on an analysis of the second data;
- (e) obtaining first location fixes with a GPS receiver at a first positional fix frequency based at least in part on the determination that the apparatus is being worn by a person;
- and
- (f) obtaining second location fixes with the GPS receiver at a second positional fix frequency lower than the first positional fix frequency based at least in part on the determination that the apparatus is not being worn by a person.
A non-transitory, machine-readable storage medium, wherein the storage medium stores computer-executable instructions for controlling at least one processor communicatively connected with a global positioning system (GPS) receiver and at least one non-GPS sensor to:
- (a) receive, from the at least one non-GPS sensor, data from which a body characteristic of a person wearing the apparatus can be measured, wherein the at least one non-GPS sensor includes one or more sensors selected from the group consisting of photoplethysmographic sensors, electrocardiographic sensors, electromyographics sensors, galvanic skin response sensors, body fat measurement sensors, and bioimpedance sensors;
- (b) determine whether the data indicates that the apparatus is being worn by a person based at least in part on an analysis of the data;
- and
- (c) adjust the frequency with which the GPS receiver obtains positional fixes based at least in part on the analysis of the data, including:
- set the frequency with which the GPS receiver obtains positional fixes at a first level responsive, at least in part, to a determination that the apparatus is being worn by a person, and
- set the frequency with which the GPS receiver obtains positional fixes at a second level, which is lower than the first level, responsive, at least in part, to a determination that the apparatus is not being worn by a person.
