Abstract
Devices, systems and methods for treating bronchoconstriction associated with asthma, anaphylaxis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The treatment comprises transmitting impulses of energy non-invasively to selected nerve fibers that are responsible for smooth muscle dilation, such as the vagus nerve.
Claims28
A device for non-invasively treating a medical condition in a patient comprising:
- a power source;
- and
- a container coupled to the power source and comprising an interior filled with a conductive fluid and one or more energy transmission elements within the interior and surrounded by the conductive fluid, the container further comprising a contact surface for contacting a target region on an outer skin surface of a neck of the patient, wherein said one or more energy transmission elements transmits one or more electrical impulses sufficient to stimulate activity of afferent nerve fibers within a vagus nerve of the patient.
