## Claims

### Claim 1

A pH sensor comprising:
(i) a gel-filled reference electrode; and
(ii) a sensing electrode of antimony/antimony oxide or bismuth/bismuth oxide having an electroactive surface sealed within a tube comprising a cation exchange polymer that provides a barrier for the sensing electrode to both oxygen and anions from the environment exterior to the tube.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The pH sensor of claim 1 further comprising a base material in which one end of the tube is sealed in the base material and an electrically insulative housing supporting the base material.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The pH sensor of claim 1 wherein the sensing electrode is a rod of high purity metal of antimony/antimony oxide.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The pH sensor of claim 3 further comprising a base material in which one end of the tube is sealed in the base material and an electrically insulative housing supporting the base material.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The pH sensor of claim 1 wherein the sensing electrode is a rod of high purity bismuth/bismuth oxide wherein the purity of the metal is at least 99.999%.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The pH sensor of claim 5 further comprising a base material in which one end of the tube is sealed in the base material and an electrically insulative housing supporting the base material.

### Claim 7 (depends on 3)

The pH sensor of claim 3 wherein the rod of high purity antimony/antimony oxide has a diameter of 0.375 to 0.625 inches and a length of 0.5 to 0.75 inches.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The pH sensor of claim 7 further comprising a base material in which one end of the tube is sealed in the base material and an electrically insulative housing supporting the base material.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The pH sensor of claim 1 wherein the reference electrode comprises an electrode in contact with an electrolytic gel wherein the electrode and gel are enclosed within a non-conductive, waterproof container having a water-porous but not gel-porous, ion exchange interface.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The pH sensor of claim 9 wherein the reference electrode is comprised of silver metal coated with silver chloride, and wherein the purity of the silver metal is at least about 99.99% by weight.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

The pH sensor of claim 9 wherein the electrolytic gel is a gelled solution saturated with sodium chloride and further saturated with silver chloride.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The pH sensor of claim 1 further comprising a temperature sensitive element in proximity to the sensing electrode and reference electrode such that the temperature sensitive element provides an indication of temperature corresponding to a temperature of the sensing electrode and the reference electrode.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The pH sensor of claim 12 wherein the temperature sensitive element is a thermistor in a resin sealant.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The pH sensor of claim 12 further comprising a device connected to the sensing electrode and the reference electrode for monitoring the pH in an aquatic environment and for controlling pH in an aquatic environment.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The pH sensor of claim 14 wherein the device comprises a voltage amplifier and wherein an electrical output from the temperature sensitive element is provided to the voltage amplifier.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The pH sensor of claim 15 further comprising a conversion unit for translating outputs from the voltage amplifier into a pH indication and a water temperature indication and a display unit for displaying the indications wherein the pH indication is determined as a function of the water temperature indication.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The pH sensor of claim 16 further comprising a dispensing unit responsive to the device for dispensing a pH-adjustment chemical that supplies the aquatic environment with the pH-adjustment chemical.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The pH sensor of claim 17 further comprising a computer interface for inputting into the conversion unit at least one of (1) adjustments for controlling the dispensing unit and (2) a desired setting for controlling the dispensing unit.
