Abstract
Hot-rolled high-strength steel elongated structural members and method of making same are disclosed by hot-rolling high-strength steel having a specific chemical composition to provide structural units. The units are then welded together to provide structural members of desired geometrical configuration including a thin web with opposed thicker flanges extending therefrom to increase the load bearing capacity of the members.
Claims11
A method of making a welded high-strength steel elongated structural member comprising
- providing high-strength steel having a tensile strength of at least about 120,000 psi and a yield strength of at least about 90,000 psi,
- hot-rolling the high-strength steel to provide a first structural unit having a length and a first uniform cross-sectional L-shaped configuration completely along the first unit length, the first uniform cross-sectional L-shaped configuration comprising a continuous first flange precursor portion and a continuous first web precursor portion extending at about a 90° angle from the first flange precursor portion and intersecting the first web precursor portion to form a corner having inner and outer radii,
- hot-rolling the high-strength steel to provide a second structural unit having a length and a second uniform cross-sectional L-shaped configuration completely along the second unit length, the second uniform cross-sectional L-shaped configuration comprising a continuous second flange precursor portion and a second continuous web precursor portion extending at about a 90° angle from the second flange precursor portion and intersecting the second web precursor portion to form a corner having inner and outer radii,
- welding the first web precursor portion of said first structural unit to the second web precursor portion of the second structural unit to form a welded continuous web portion of the welded elongated structural member having a length and a uniform cross-sectional configuration with first and second flange portions comprising the first and second precursor flange portions, each flange portion having an average thickness and extending at about a 90° angle from the welded continuous web portion with said weld completely extending along the length of the welded elongated structural member between the first and second flange portions at a neutral axis of said welded elongated structural member,
- said welded continuous web portion having an average thickness less than the average thickness of said first and second flange portions,
- said welded continuous web portion thickness providing weight savings in said welded elongated structural member with essentially no strength compromise uniformly along the welded elongated structural member length as shown by the calculation for comparative section modulus (ΔSM) of said welded elongated structural member when compared to a baseline structural member with a web portion and extending flanges having the same thickness.
