## Abstract

An MRI antenna array including a housing and a substrate, antenna elements and circuitry encapsulated by the housing. The housing, antenna elements, and substrate are flexible to allow the housing to distort in three dimensions to closely conform to contours of a patient. The antenna elements are mounted to the substrate in a manner that permits each element to maintain a desired resonance when the housing is distorted in three dimensions. The circuitry is electrically coupled with the antenna elements to maintain tuning and isolation of the elements when the housing is distorted in three dimensions. The housing, antenna elements, and substrate may be elastic to allow the housing to be worn by a plurality of different sized patients so that the housing is in close contact with the patient and conforms to contours of the patient.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A magnetic resonance imaging antenna array for detecting nuclear magnetic resonance signals from a patient, comprising:
a flexible substrate;
at least one rigid board coupled to the flexible substrate;
a first antenna element coupled to both the flexible substrate and the rigid board, wherein the first antenna element is flexible; and
a second antenna element coupled to both the flexible substrate and the rigid board, wherein the second antenna element is flexible, wherein a portion of the first antenna element overlaps a portion of the second antenna element in a location that is adjacent to both where the first antenna element is coupled to the rigid board and where the second antenna element is coupled to the rigid board, and wherein an area is circumscribed by the first and second antenna elements.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The array of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first and second antenna elements is coupled to said substrate with at least one clamp that permits the at least one of the first and second antenna elements to move a desired amount through said clamp.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The array of claim 1, further comprising a second rigid board coupled to the flexible substrate, wherein the first antenna element is coupled to the second rigid board, wherein the second antenna element is coupled to the second rigid board, wherein a portion of the first antenna element overlaps a portion of the second antenna element in a location that is adjacent to both where the first antenna element is coupled to the second rigid board and where the second antenna element is coupled to the second rigid board.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The array of claim 1, wherein the area circumscribed by the first and second antenna elements remains constant as the substrate is distorted in three dimensions in order to maintain inductive isolation between the first and second antenna elements.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The array of claim 1, further comprising a housing that at least partially encapsulates the flexible substrate, rigid board, first antenna element, and second antenna element, wherein said housing, substrate, rigid board, and first and second antenna elements form a blanket which is able to flex in three dimensions.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The array of claim 5, wherein said housing, substrate, rigid board, and first and second antenna elements are formed from relatively small, lightweight materials so that said blanket may be draped over an infant patient in a manner that does not compromise the patient's breathing.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The array of claim 1, further comprising a housing that at least partially encapsulates the flexible substrate, rigid board, first antenna element, and second antenna element, wherein said housing, substrate, rigid board, and first and second antenna elements are configured to be positioned over the patient's torso and a portion of the patient's neck.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The array of claim 7, further comprising a plurality of antenna elements configured as a carotid array.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The array of claim 8, wherein the housing comprises a generally planar blanket joined to an arcuate neck section, wherein the first and second antenna elements are encapsulated by the blanket and the carotid array is encapsulated by the arcuate neck section.

### Claim 10 (depends on 5)

The array of claim 5, wherein said housing comprises a plurality of grooves and non-grooved regions separated by said grooves.

### Claim 11

A magnetic resonance imaging antenna array for detecting nuclear magnetic resonance signals from a patient, comprising:
a flexible housing comprising at least one non-grooved region having a first thickness and at least one grooved region having a second thickness, wherein the second thickness is less than the first thickness when the housing is positioned so that it is generally planar;
a flexible substrate at least partially encapsulated by said housing; and
a plurality of antenna elements coupled to the substrate and at least partially encapsulated by said housing.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The array of claim 11, further comprising a cable that is electrically coupled with at least one of the antenna elements, and a hollow cable guide attached to said housing and receiving a portion of said cable.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The array of claim 11, where the housing comprises compressible foam.

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)

The array of claim 11, further comprising a circuit board coupled to at least one of the plurality of antenna elements, wherein the non-grooved region comprises a hollowed out or thinner area that covers the circuit board.

### Claim 15 (depends on 5)

The array of claim 5, wherein the housing comprises:
flat sheets that encapsulate the flexible substrate, rigid board, first antenna element, and second antenna element; and
foam positioned between the sheets, wherein the foam comprises a cut out or compressed region that is aligned with the rigid board such that the housing has a relatively constant thickness.
