Scaling a plurality of signals to prevent amplitude clipping

A signal-processing device for amplitude compressing a plurality of digital signals to mitigate clipping and outputting to a device for use by that device with reduced distortion, the signal-processing device comprising:

• a frame-identifying module for identifying a frame in each of the plurality of signals, each frame comprising a first set of samples followed by a second set of samples;
• a buffer for storing the first sets of samples for each of the frames;
• and
• a scaling module for scaling each of the plurality of digital signals to reduce later distortion of a scaled plurality of signals by applying an array of scale factors to corresponding samples in each of the first sets of samples, the array of scale factors being computed based at least in part on a first peak value among all of the first sets of samples and a second peak value among all of the second sets of samples, the size of the array being equivalent to the number of samples in the first set of samples;
• and
• an output of the signal-processing device that outputs the scaled plurality of signals to the device.

A signal-processing device for amplitude compressing a plurality of digital signals to mitigate clipping and outputting to a device for use by that device with reduced distortion, the device comprising:

• means for identifying a frame of each of the plurality of digital signals, each frame comprising a first set of samples followed by a second set of samples;
• means for determining a first peak value among all of the first sets of samples;
• means for determining a second peak value among all of the second sets of samples;
• means for computing an array of scale factors based at least in part on the first peak value and the second peak value, the size of the array being equivalent to the number of samples in the first set of samples;
• and
• an output of the signal-processing device that outputs the scaled plurality of signals to the device.
