Abstract
Methods and systems for communicating in a wireless network may distinguish different types of packet structures by modifying the phase of a modulation constellation, such as a binary phase shift keying (BPSK) constellation, in a signal field. Receiving devices may identify the type of packet structure associated with a transmission or whether the signal field is present by the phase of the modulation constellation used for mapping for the signal field. In one embodiment, the phase of the modulation constellation may be determined by examining the energy of the I and Q components after Fast Fourier Transform. Various specific embodiments and variations are also disclosed.
Claims21
A method for a device to receive transmissions over a wireless medium, the method comprising:
- receiving a signal including a physical layer convergence protocol procedure (PLCP) protocol data unit (PPDU) over a wireless communication channel, the PPDU including a preamble having a legacy signaling (L-SIG) modulated with binary phase shift keying (BPSK);
- and
- detecting a modulation scheme for modulation of a field immediately following the L-SIG after detection of the L-SIG to determine whether the field immediately following the L-SIG comprises an additional signaling field;
- and
- determining that the additional signaling field immediately following the L-SIG is a high throughput signaling field (HT-SIG) when a quaternary binary phase shift keying (QBPSK) modulation scheme is detected.
A method for a device to transmit a wireless medium, the method comprising:
- generating a signal including a physical layer convergence protocol procedure (PLCP) protocol data unit, the PLCP data unit including a preamble having a legacy signaling field (L-SIG) and a high throughput signaling field (HT-SIG) immediately following the L-SIG;
- and
- modulating the data unit on subcarriers of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) frame including modulating one or more subcarriers corresponding to the L-SIG using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and modulating one or more subcarriers corresponding to the FIT-SIG using quaternary binary phase shift keying (QBPSK) to facilitate determination by a receiver that an additional signaling field is present based on detection of a modulation scheme for modulation of the field immediately following the L-SIG.
An apparatus for transmitting signals over a wireless network, the apparatus comprising:
- a host processing circuit to modulate a legacy signaling field (L-SIG) of a high-throughput physical layer convergence protocol procedure (PLCP) protocol data unit using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and to modulate a high-throughput (HT) signaling field (HT-SIG) immediately following the L-SIG using quaternary binary phase shift keying (QBPSK) to signal to a receiving device that an additional signaling field is present based on detection of a modulation scheme for modulation of the field immediately following the L-SIG.
An apparatus for receiving signals over a wireless network, the apparatus comprising:
- a processing circuit configured to receive a signal including a physical layer convergence protocol procedure (PLCP) protocol data unit (PPDU) over a wireless communication channel, the PPDU including a preamble having a legacy signaling field (L-SIG) modulated with binary phase shift keying (BPSK), the processing circuit configured to detect a modulation scheme for modulation of a field immediately following the L-SIG after detection of the L-SIG to determine whether the field immediately following the L-SIG comprises an additional signaling field, the processing circuit configured to determine that the additional signaling field immediately following the L-SIG is a high-throughput (HT) signaling field (HT-SIG) when quaternary binary phase shift keying (QBPSK) modulation is detected.
