Abstract
The present invention provides a composition having disinfectancy & residual antimicrobial activity, where the antimicrobial composition comprises an organosilane quaternary compound and a quaternary ammonium compound and other formulations. Also provided are methods of disinfecting an article or providing an antimicrobial coating to an article using the same.
Claims8
A method of disinfecting a substrate having a surface, comprising:
- providing a substrate having a surface;
- applying an aqueous composition having antimicrobial activity to at least a portion of the surface of the substrate, wherein the aqueous composition comprises approximately 4% by weight of an organosilane quaternary ammonium compound and approximately 2% by weight of a quaternary ammonium compound, and wherein the quaternary ammonium compound is not an organosilane quaternary ammonium compound;
- bonding at least a portion of the aqueous composition having antimicrobial activity to at least a portion of the surface of the substrate to form an antimicrobial coating on the surface of the substrate without having to modify the surface;
- and
- disinfecting the at least a portion of the surface of the substrate having the antimicrobial coating;
- wherein the organosilane quaternary ammonium compound is 3-trimethoxysilyl propyltetradecyldimethyl ammonium chloride;
- and
- wherein the quaternary ammonium compound comprises a mixture of alkyl (C14, C12 and C16) dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, octyl decyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, dioctyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride.
A method of providing an antimicrobial or disinfectant coating to a substrate having a surface, comprising:
- providing a substrate having a surface;
- applying an aqueous composition having antimicrobial activity to at least a portion of the surface of the substrate, wherein the aqueous composition comprises approximately 4% by weight of an organosilane quaternary ammonium compound and approximately 2% by weight of a quaternary ammonium compound, and wherein the quaternary ammonium compound is not an organosilane quaternary ammonium compound;
- bonding at least a portion of the aqueous composition having antimicrobial activity to at least a portion of the surface of the substrate, wherein covalently bonding at least a portion of the aqueous composition comprises covalently bonding the organosilane quaternary ammonium compound and the quaternary ammonium compound to at least a portion of the surface of the substrate without having to modify the surface;
- and
- forming an antimicrobial coating on at least a portion of the surface of the substrate, wherein the antimicrobial coating is bacteriostatic and bacteriocidal;
- wherein the organosilane quaternary ammonium compound is 3-trimethoxysilyl propyltetradecyldimethyl ammonium chloride;
- and
- wherein the quaternary ammonium compound comprises a mixture of alkyl (C14, C12 and C16) dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, octyl decyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, dioctyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride.
A composition having antimicrobial activity comprising a covalently-bonded coating comprising approximately 4% by weight of an organosilane quaternary ammonium compound and approximately 2% by weight of a quaternary ammonium compound, wherein the quaternary ammonium compound is not an organosilane quaternary ammonium compound;
- wherein the organosilane quaternary ammonium compound is 3-trimethoxysilyl propyltetradecyldimethyl ammonium chloride;
- and
- wherein the quaternary ammonium compound comprises a mixture of alkyl (C14, C12 and C16) dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, octyl decyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, dioctyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride.
