## Abstract

The present invention relates to hair treatment compositions and methods. More particularly, the invention relates to hair treatment compositions comprising lipids and creatine. The hair treatment compositions of the present invention may be used to improve the tensile properties of hair, such as hair elasticity and strength.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for improving the tensile properties of hair comprising
applying to the hair a composition formulated as a shampoo, a conditioner, or a combination thereof, the composition comprising (a) from about 0.01% to about 3.0% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition of a lipid and (b) from about 0.01% to about 3.0% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition of creatine, wherein the weight ratio of creatine to lipid in the composition is from 2:1 to 1:2 (creatine:lipid).

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A method according to claim 1, wherein the lipid is selected from the group consisting of ceramides, glucosylceramides, cholesterol, and combinations thereof.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A method according to claim 1, wherein the lipid is ceramide 3.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

A method according to claim 1, wherein the weight ratio of creatine to lipid in the composition is from (i) 1:1 to 1:2 (creatine:lipid); or (ii) 1:1 (creatine:lipid).

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

A method according to claim 1, wherein the weight ratio of creatine to lipid in the composition is 1:1 (creatine:lipid).

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

A method according to claim 1, further comprising free amino acids other than creatine.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

A method according to claim 6, wherein the free amino acids are naturally occurring, non-naturally occurring, or combinations thereof.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

A method according to claim 1, further comprising a cosmetically acceptable additive, adjuvant, thickening agent, conditioning agent, solvent, and combinations thereof.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

A method according to claim 8, wherein the additive is selected from the group consisting of monoalcohols, polyalcohols, glycol ethers, fatty acid esters, preserving agents, sequestering agents, softening agents, foaming agents, dyes, viscosity-modifying agents, nacreous agents, hydrating agents, anti-dandruff agents, antiseborrhoeic agents, sunscreen agents, surfactants, proteins, vitamins, α-hydroxy acids, detoxifying agents, fragrances, salts thereof, and combinations thereof.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

A method according to claim 8, wherein the adjuvant is a nonionic surface-active agent.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

A method according to claim 10, wherein the nonionic surface-active agent is selected from the group consisting of polyethoxylated, polypropoxylated or polyglycerolated alcohols, α-diols, alkylphenols, fatty acids and combinations thereof.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

A method according to claim 8, wherein the thickening agent is selected from the group consisting of sodium alginate, gum arabic, cellulose derivatives, guar gum, xanthan gums, scleroglucans, crosslinked polyacrylic acids, polyurethanes, copolymers based on maleic acid or on maleic anhydride, associative thickeners bearing fatty chains of natural or unnatural origin, derivatives, and combinations thereof.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

A method according to claim 8, wherein the conditioning agent is selected from the group consisting of synthetic or non-synthetic linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated cyclic or aliphatic hydrocarbons, hydrogenated or unhydrogenated natural oils, soluble or insoluble volatile or non-volatile silicones, polybutenes, polyisobutenes, fatty esters in liquid, pasty or solid form, esters of polyhydric alcohols, glycerides, natural or synthetic waxes, silicone gums and resins, and combinations thereof.

### Claim 14 (depends on 4)

A method according to claim 4, wherein the lipid is ceramide 3.

### Claim 15 (depends on 5)

A method according to claim 5, wherein the lipid is ceramide 3.
