Abstract
Embodiments of the disclosure pertain to a composite slip for a downhole tool, the composite slip having a circular slip body having one-piece configuration with at least partial connectivity around the entire circular slip body, and at least two grooves disposed therein. In aspects, the slip body may be made from one of filament wound material, fiberglass cloth wound material, and molded fiberglass composite.
Claims26
A downhole tool useable for isolating sections of a wellbore, the downhole tool comprising:
- a composite mandrel having at least one set of threads;
- a composite slip disposed about the composite mandrel, the composite slip further comprising a circular slip body having one-piece configuration with at least partial connectivity around the entire circular slip body, and at least two grooves disposed therein;
- a seal element;
- and
- a composite member disposed about the mandrel and in engagement with the seal element, wherein the composite member is made of a first material and comprises a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion comprises at least one groove, and wherein a second material is bonded to the first portion and at least partially fills into the at least one groove, wherein setting of the downhole tool in the wellbore includes at least a portion of the composite slip in gripping engagement with a surrounding tubular, and the seal element also disposed about the mandrel sealingly engaged with the surrounding tubular.
A method of setting a downhole tool in order to isolate one or more sections of a wellbore, the method comprising:
- running the downhole tool into the wellbore to a desired position, the downhole tool comprising:
- a mandrel having at least one set of threads;
- a composite slip disposed about the mandrel, the composite slip further comprising a circular slip body having one-piece configuration with at least partial connectivity around the entire circular slip body, and at least two grooves disposed therein;
- a composite member disposed about the mandrel, wherein the composite member is made of a first material and comprises a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion comprises at least one groove, and wherein a second material is bonded to the first portion and at least partially fills into the at least one groove,
- placing the mandrel under a tensile load that causes a cone to engage the composite slip and expand the circular slip body outwardly into at least partial engagement with a surrounding tubular;
- and
- disconnecting the downhole tool from a setting device coupled therewith when the tensile load is sufficient to cause separation of the downhole tool from the setting device.
A downhole tool useable for isolating sections of a wellbore, the downhole tool comprising:
- a composite mandrel having at least one set of threads;
- a composite slip disposed about the composite mandrel, the composite slip further comprising a slip body having one-piece configuration with at least partial connectivity around the entire slip body, and at least two slip grooves disposed therein;
- and
- a composite member disposed about the mandrel, wherein the composite member is made of a first material and comprises a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion comprises at least one groove, and wherein a second material is bonded to the first portion and at least partially fills into the at least one groove.
A downhole tool useable for isolating sections of a wellbore, the downhole tool comprising:
- a mandrel comprising composite material;
- a slip made of filament wound material and disposed on the mandrel, the slip further comprising a slip body having one-piece configuration, and two slip grooves disposed therein;
- and
- a composite member disposed about the mandrel, wherein the composite member is made of a first material and comprises a first portion and a second portion, and wherein the first portion comprises at least one groove, and wherein a second material is bonded to the first portion and at least partially fills into the at least one groove.
