Abstract
A lateral overflow drain and a channel stop are fabricated using a double mask process. Each lateral overflow drain is formed within a respective channel stop. Due to the use of two mask layers, one edge of each lateral overflow drain is aligned, or substantially aligned, with an edge of a respective channel stop.
Claims10
An image sensor comprising:
- a plurality of pixels for accumulating charge carriers in response to exposure to light, each pixel including at least one shift element;
- associated with a pixel, a channel stop for preventing charge carriers from moving thereacross from the pixel to an adjoining pixel;
- disposed completely within the channel stop, a lateral overflow drain for draining excess charge carriers from the at least one shift element, wherein an edge of the lateral overflow drain nearest the at least one shift element shares a common side edge in a lateral direction with an edge of the channel stop nearest the at least one shift element to allow the excess charge carriers to move into the lateral overflow drain that would otherwise be prevented from moving by the channel stop into the lateral overflow drain without the aid of a region across the channel stop between the at least one shift element and the lateral overflow drain;
- and
- a field oxide region disposed on the channel stop and lateral overflow drain.

An image sensor comprising:
- a plurality of pixels for accumulating charge carriers in response to exposure to light;
- associated with a pixel, a channel stop for preventing charge carriers from moving there across from the pixel to an adjoining pixel;
- disposed completely within the channel stop, a lateral overflow drain for draining excess charge carriers from the pixel, wherein the lateral overflow drain and the channel stop share only one common side edge in a lateral direction to allow the excess charge carriers to move into the lateral overflow drain that would otherwise be prevented from moving by the channel stop into the lateral overflow drain without the aid of a region across the channel stop between the pixel and the lateral overflow drain;
- and
- a field oxide region disposed on the channel stop and lateral overflow drain.
