Systems and methods to transform a colored point cloud to a 3D textured mesh

A system comprising:

• at least one processor;
• a non-transitory computer-readable medium;
• and
• program instructions stored on the non-transitory computer-readable medium and executable by the at least one processor to cause the system to:
• identify a location on a two-dimensional (2D) image of an object;
• identify a location on a three-dimensional (3D) image of the object, wherein the location on the 3D image corresponds to the location on the 2D image;
• determine a color associated with the location on the 2D image by:
• receiving data associated with a simulation of a plurality of rays cast on the 3D image, wherein each of the plurality of rays are indicative of virtual light rays extending from a source to the location on the 3D image;
• identifying a color of the location on the 3D image associated with the received data, wherein the identified color is indicative of a color substantially at the location on the 3D image;
• identifying a confidence level associated with the identified color of the location on the 3D image, wherein the confidence level is indicative of a likelihood that the identified color associated with the received data includes the color at the location on the 3D image of the object;
• and
• associating the identified color of the location on the 3D image with the location on the 2D image based on the confidence level.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon instructions executable by a computing device having at least one processor to cause the computing device to perform functions comprising:

• identifying a location on a two-dimensional (2D) image of an object;
• identifying a location on a three-dimensional (3D) image of the object, wherein the location on the 3D image corresponds to the location on the 2D image;
• determining a color associated with the location on the 2D image by:
• receiving data associated with a simulation of a plurality of rays cast on the 3D image, wherein each of the plurality of rays are indicative of virtual light rays extending from a source to the location on the 3D image;
• identifying a color of the location on the 3D image associated with the received data, wherein the identified color is indicative of a color substantially at the location on the 3D image;
• identifying a confidence level associated with the identified color of the location on the 3D image, wherein the confidence level is indicative of a likelihood that the identified color associated with the received data includes the color at the location on the 3D image of the object;
• and
• associating the identified color of the location on the 3D image with the location on the 2D image based on the confidence level.
