Abstract
A process for scheduling reservation requests among a plurality of nodes on a network, includes examining a level of network communication activity of a first node to determine whether the first node is active; allocating a reservation request to the first node, but only if the first node is determined to be active; and repeating the process of examining and allocating for one or more subsequent nodes on the network. In one embodiment, the process can utilize thresholds to determine whether a network device is active and the thresholds can be based on, for example, recent network activity for the node being evaluated.
Claims29
A method for scheduling reservation requests among a plurality of nodes on a network, comprising:
- a network device examining a level of network communication activity of a first node to determine a level of communication activity of the first node over one or more previous cycles and to determine a number of cycles since the first node has been allocated a reservation request;
- and
- the network device determining whether to allocate a reservation request to the first node based upon the determined level of communication activity of the first node as a function of the determined number of cycles since the last allocation of a reservation request.
A network device, comprising:
- a controller;
- a device module;
- memory coupled to the controller;
- computer executable program code on a computer readable medium configured to cause the controller to perform the functions of:
- examining a level of network communication activity of a first node to determine whether the first node is active and to determine a number of cycles since the first node has been allocated a reservation request;
- determining whether to allocate a reservation request to the first node based upon the determination of whether the first node is active as a function of the determined number of cycles since the last allocation of a reservation request to the first node;
- and
- examining a level of network communication activity of a second node to determine whether the second node is active and to determine a number of cycles since the second node has been allocated a reservation request;
- and
- determining whether to allocate a reservation request to the second node based upon the determination of whether second node is active.
A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer readable medium having code embodied therein for performing resource allocation in a communication network, the code configured to cause a device to:
- examine a level of network communication activity of a first node to determine whether the first node is active and to determine a number of cycles since the first node has been allocated a reservation request;
- determine whether to allocate a reservation request to the first node based upon the determination of whether the first node is active as a function of the determined number of cycles since the last allocation of a reservation request to the first node;
- and
- examining a level of network communication activity of a second node to determine whether the second node is active and to determine a number of cycles since the second node has been allocated a reservation request;
- and
- determining whether to allocate a reservation request to the second node based upon the determination of whether the second node is active as a function of the determined number of cycles since the last allocation of a reservation request to the second node.
A network interface module, comprising:
- a controller;
- memory coupled to the controller;
- computer executable program code on a computer readable medium configured to cause the controller to perform the functions of:
- examining a level of network communication activity of a first node to determine whether the first node is active and to determine whether a number of cycles since the first node has been allocated a reservation request;
- determining whether to allocate a reservation request to the first node based upon the determination of whether the first node is active as a function of the determined number of cycles since the last allocation of a reservation request to the first node;
- and
- examining a level of network communication activity of a second node on the network to determine whether the second node is active and to determine a number of cycles since the second node has been allocated a reservation request;
- and
- determining whether to allocate a reservation request to the second node based upon the determination of whether the second node is active as a function of the determined number of cycles since the last allocation of a reservation request to the second node.
