Methods and apparatus to monitor border gateway protocol sessions

A tangible machine readable storage device comprising instructions that, when executed, cause a machine to perform operations comprising:

• initiating a sustained-down timer in response to detecting a failure of a first border gateway protocol session;
• matching a session time-stamp associated with the failure of the first border gateway protocol session with a second time-stamp associated with a failure of a second border gateway protocol session;
• identifying a sustained-down condition in response to the sustained-down timer exceeding a first time threshold;
• and
• identifying a root cause interface responsible for the sustained-down condition when (a) the session time-stamp associated with the failure of the first border gateway protocol session matches the second time-stamp associated with log information indicative of the failure associated with the second border gateway protocol session and (b) an Internet protocol address of the first border gateway protocol session matches an Internet protocol address of the second border gateway protocol session.

An apparatus comprising:

• a memory having machine readable instructions stored thereon;
• and
• a processor to execute the instructions to:
• initiate a sustained-down timer in response to detection of a failure of a first border gateway protocol session;
• match a session time-stamp associated with the failure of the first border gateway protocol session with a second time-stamp associated with a failure of a second border gateway protocol session;
• identify a sustained-down condition in response to the sustained-down timer exceeding a first time threshold;
• and
• identify a root cause interface responsible for the sustained-down condition when (a) the session time-stamp associated with the failure matches the second time-stamp associated with log information indicative of the failure associated with the second border gateway protocol session and (b) an Internet protocol address of the first border gateway protocol session matches an Internet protocol address of the second border gateway protocol session.
