Abstract
The present invention provides a system and method for diagnosing, monitoring or prognosing Multiple Sclerosis at different stages as well as affording the prediction of disease activity and response to a treatment regimen, using at least one sensor comprising carbon nanotubes or metal nanoparticles, each coated with various organic coatings in conjunction with a pattern recognition algorithm.
Claims20
A method of diagnosing, monitoring or prognosing Multiple Sclerosis or stages thereof in a subject, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a system comprising an apparatus comprising at least one sensor comprising nanomaterials selected from single walled carbon nanotubes coated with a first organic coating, metal nanoparticles coated with a second organic coating and a combination thereof, wherein the at least one sensor senses at least one volatile biomarker indicative of Multiple Sclerosis or stages thereof through adsorption of the biomarker on the nanomaterials;
- a detection means;
- and a processing unit comprising a pattern recognition analyzer comprising at least one pattern recognition algorithm;
- (b) exposing the at least one sensor to a test exhaled breath sample;
- (c) measuring at least one response induced parameter from the at least one sensor upon exposure to the test sample to obtain a response pattern;
- and
- (d) analyzing the response pattern obtained in step (c) using a pattern recognition algorithm by comparing it to stored data obtained from a control sample whereby a significantly different response pattern of the test sample as compared the control sample is indicative of Multiple Sclerosis or stages thereof.
A method of diagnosing, monitoring or prognosing Multiple Sclerosis or stages thereof in a subject, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a system comprising an apparatus comprising at least one sensor comprising nanomaterials selected from single walled carbon nanotubes coated with a first organic coating, metal nanoparticles coated with a second organic coating and a combination thereof;
- a detection means;
- and a processing unit comprising a pattern recognition analyzer comprising at least one pattern recognition algorithm;
- (b) exposing the at least one sensor to a test exhaled breath sample;
- (c) measuring at least one response induced parameter from the at least one sensor upon exposure to the test sample to obtain a response pattern, wherein the response pattern is formed by the sensor detecting at least one volatile biomarker indicative of Multiple Sclerosis or stages thereof, the biomarker comprising hexanal or 5-methyl-undecane;
- and
- (d) analyzing the response pattern obtained in step (c) using a pattern recognition algorithm by comparing it to stored data obtained from a control sample whereby a significantly different response pattern of the test sample as compared the control sample is indicative of Multiple Sclerosis or stages thereof.
A method of diagnosing, monitoring or prognosing Multiple Sclerosis or stages thereof in a subject, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a system comprising an apparatus comprising at least one sensor comprising nanomaterials selected from single walled carbon nanotubes coated with a first organic coating, metal nanoparticles coated with a second organic coating and a combination thereof, wherein the second organic coating comprises compounds selected from the group consisting of alkylthiols, arylthiols, alkylarylthiols, alkylthiolates, ω-functionalized alkanethiolates, arenethiolates, (γ-mercaptopropyl)tri-methyloxysilane, dialkyl disulfides and combinations and derivatives thereof;
- or wherein the second organic coating comprises compounds selected from the group consisting of hexanethiol, decanethiol, octadecanethiol, tert-odecanethiol, 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, 2-ethylhexyl-3-mercaptopropionate and combinations thereof;
- a detection means;
- and a processing unit comprising a pattern recognition analyzer comprising at least one pattern recognition algorithm;
- (b) exposing the at least one sensor to a test exhaled breath sample;
- (c) measuring at least one response induced parameter from the at least one sensor upon exposure to the test sample to obtain a response pattern;
- and
- (d) analyzing the response pattern obtained in step (c) using a pattern recognition algorithm by comparing it to stored data obtained from a control sample whereby a significantly different response pattern of the test sample as compared the control sample is indicative of Multiple Sclerosis or stages thereof.
