Digital broadcasting transmission/reception system utilizing mull packet and TRS code to improve receiving performance and signal processing method thereof

A digital broadcast receiver, comprising:

• a demodulator to receive and demodulate a transport stream (TS), which comprises data, a parity added by encoding the data in a column direction, known data and a Reed Solomon (RS) parity of the data;
• a known data output part to detect information regarding the known data from the TS;
• an equalizer to equalize the demodulated TS using the known data;
• and
• a decoder to decode the equalized TS in the column direction,
• wherein the known data is different from a field sync and a segment sync of the TS, and
• wherein, before the TS is received at the digital broadcasting receiver, the TS has been processed by adding the known data and the parity to the data, and RS encoding, interleaving and Trellis encoding the data to which the known data and the parity are added, and
• wherein the TS is trellis-encoded by a trellis encoder included in the digital broadcast transmitter, and the trellis encoder resets a plurality of memories in the digital broadcast transmitter, which are used to trellis-encode the TS, at beginning of the known data.
