Abstract
Method and apparatus for processing packet flows in a communication system. In one embodiment, a resource reservation message includes packet flow parameter information used to determine flow treatment of the associated packet flow. The packet flow mapping is based on the quality of service of the associated packet flow. In another embodiment, a bearer connection is established and monitored for information relating to flow treatment.
Claims29
A method operable by an infrastructure entity in a communication system, comprising:
- examining a data packet exchanged between at least two communication entities;
- detecting packet flow parameter information from the data packet;
- and
- determining packet flow treatment of data packets exchanged between the at least two communication entities based on the packet flow parameter information detected from the data packet, wherein the data packet exchanged is received from a mobile station and comprises a session initiation message indicating that a request has succeeded and a codec type for the data packets, wherein a header compression type is determined based on the codec type, and wherein when the codec type is determined to be a non-code-division-multiple-access codec then robust header compression is used and when the codec type is determined to be a code-division-multiple-access codec then link-layer-assisted robust header compression is used.
A method operable by a mobile station in a communication system, comprising:
- sending a data packet which includes packet flow parameter information to another communication entity via an infrastructure entity which determines packet flow treatment of data packets exchanged between the mobile station and the another communication entity, wherein the data packet exchanged is sent from the mobile station and comprises a session initiation message indicating that a request has succeeded and a codec type for the data packets, wherein a header compression type is determined based on the codec type, and wherein when the codec type is determined to be a non-code-division-multiple-access codec then robust header compression is used and when the codec type is determined to be a code-division-multiple-access codec then link-layer-assisted robust header compression is used;
- and
- receiving a message for establishing connection if the infrastructure entity determines a new packet flow treatment is needed.
An infrastructure entity in a communication system, comprising:
- means for examining a data packet exchanged between at least two communication entities;
- means for detecting packet flow parameter information from the data packet;
- and
- means for determining packet flow treatment of data packets exchanged between the at least two communication entities based on the packet flow parameter information detected from the data packet, wherein the data packet exchanged is received from a mobile station and comprises a session initiation message indicating that a request has succeeded and a codec type for the data packets, wherein a header compression type is determined based on the codec type, and wherein when the codec type is determined to be a non-code-division-multiple-access codec then robust header compression is used and when the codec type is determined to be a code-division-multiple-access codec then link-layer-assisted robust header compression is used.
A mobile station in a communication system, comprising:
- means for sending a data packet which includes packet flow parameter information to another communication entity via an infrastructure entity which determines packet flow treatment of data packets exchanged between the mobile station and the another communication entity, wherein the data packet exchanged is sent from the mobile station and comprises a session initiation message indicating that a request has succeeded and a codec type for the data packets, wherein a header compression type is determined based on the codec type, and wherein when the codec type is determined to be a non-code-division-multiple-access codec then robust header compression is used and when the codec type is determined to be a code-division-multiple-access codec then link-layer-assisted robust header compression is used;
- and
- means for receiving a message for establishing connection if the infrastructure entity determines a new packet flow treatment is needed.
An infrastructure entity in a communication system, comprising:
- circuitry configured to:
- examine a data packet exchanged between at least two communication entities;

A mobile station in a communication system, comprising:
- circuitry configured to:
- send a data packet which includes packet flow parameter information to another communication entity via an infrastructure entity which determines packet flow treatment of data packets exchanged between the mobile station and the another communication entity, wherein the data packet exchanged is sent from the mobile station and comprises a session initiation message indicating that a request has succeeded and a codec type for the data packets, wherein a header compression type is determined based on the codec type, and wherein when the codec type is determined to be a non-code-division-multiple-access codec then robust header compression is used and when the codec type is determined to be a code-division-multiple-access codec then link-layer-assisted robust header compression is used;
