Abstract
The invention discloses compositions and methods for generating alkalinity in situ. The compositions and methods relate to the use of a fabric source containing a decomposition agent to catalyze the decomposition of a dilute peroxygen source. The methods provide a highly alkaline cleaning composition produced at a desired time and place of use. Methods of cleaning are also disclosed.
Claims27
A multiple component cleaning system comprising:
- a first component comprising a dilute peroxygen source having a concentration from about 0.01-10% and a pH between about 7 and 10;
- a second component comprising a decomposition agent, wherein said decomposition agent is silver or manganese;
- and
- a third component comprising a support matrix, wherein said decomposition agent is bound to the support matrix;
- wherein upon bringing into contact the first component with the bound second and third components a highly alkaline cleaning composition is formed in situ by the decomposition of said first component to form hydroxide anions sufficient to increase the pH of the system by greater than about 3;
- wherein said support matrix is a reusable fabric, pad, sponge or combination thereof;
- and
- wherein the increase in pH generated does not employ an alkali metal hydroxide or other alkaline compound.
A multiple component cleaning system comprising:
- a first component comprising a dilute peroxygen source having a concentration between 0.01-10% and a pH between about 7 and 10;
- a second component comprising a decomposition agent wherein said decomposition agent is silver or manganese;
- and
- a third component comprising a reusable fabric, wherein said third component is bound to the second component, and wherein upon bringing the first component into contact with the bound second and third components, a cleaning composition is formed through the catalyzation of the decomposition of said peroxygen source to form hydroxide anions sufficient to increase the pH of said peroxygen source by greater than about 3 so that the cleaning composition has a pH greater than about 10, and wherein the increase in pH generated does not employ an alkali metal hydroxide or other alkaline compound.
A cleaning system comprising:
- a dilute peroxygen source having a concentration between 0.5-5% and a pH between about 7 and 10;
- a cleaning agent having a pH between about 7 and about 10;
- a silver or manganese decomposition agent;
- and
- a reusable fabric, pad, sponge or combination thereof, wherein said decomposition agent is bound to the fabric, pad, sponge or combination thereof and wherein the combination of the dilute peroxygen source and decomposition agent catalyzes the decomposition of said peroxygen source to form hydroxide anions to generate a highly alkaline cleaning composition, and wherein said decomposition of said peroxygen source is sufficient to generate an increase in pH of greater than about 3 so that the highly alkaline cleaning composition has a pH greater than about 10, and wherein the increase in pH generated does not employ an alkali metal hydroxide or other alkaline compound.
A method for generating alkalinity comprising:
- embedding a fabric, pad, sponge or combination thereof with a silver or manganese decomposition agent;
- contacting a dilute peroxygen source having a pH between about 7 and 10 with the fabric, pad, sponge or combination thereof;
- and
- generating alkalinity via decomposition of said dilute peroxygen source to form hydroxide anions sufficient to increase the pH by greater than about 3, wherein the increase in pH generated does not employ an alkali metal hydroxide or other alkaline compound.
A method of cleaning comprising:
- binding one or more decomposition agents to a support matrix comprising a reusable fabric, pad, sponge or combination thereof;
- applying a cleaning composition to an article in need of cleaning, wherein the cleaning composition comprises a dilute peroxygen source having a concentration between about 0.01-10% and a pH between about 7 and 10;
- contacting said article with said support matrix, wherein said decomposition agent catalyzes the decomposition of said peroxygen source to form hydroxide anions sufficient to increase pH by greater than about 3 to a pH greater than about 10, and wherein the increase in pH generated does not employ an alkali metal hydroxide or other alkaline compound.
