Abstract
A composting apparatus comprising a container for receiving material to be composted a base member in the apparatus for supporting material to be composted and the compost when formed, the base having a curved lower wall and an upper opening to define a volume for receiving a drainage medium, a leachate chamber formed in the wall so that when leachate forms, the leachate is able to flow through the medium into the chamber; and an outlet from the chamber for supplying the leachate to the outside of the container.
Claims12
A composting apparatus, comprising:
- a container for receiving material to be composted;
- an aerator located in the container, the aerator comprising an aerator pipe with a cap and having at least one opening for allowing air to pass from the aerator into an interior of the container for facilitating aerobic decomposition of material to form compost;
- an airflow path that supplies air from outside the container to the aerator that is in communication with the aerator pipe;
- a base in the container for supporting material to be composted and having an upper base wall with an opening through which the aerator pipe is supported to extend into the interior of the container;
- a leachate chamber on the underside of the upper base wall to receive leachate formed by the composting material;
- wherein the upper base wall has multiple openings for allowing leachate to flow from the composting material into the leachate chamber;
- and
- an outlet from the leachate chamber for drainage of the leachate from the chamber to the outside of the container.
