Abstract
This disclosure provides methods of flash sintering and composition created by these methods.
Claims24
A method of sintering a body comprising particles of a ceramic material, the method comprising
- a) applying a DC, AC or pulsed electrical field with power supply acting under voltage control to the body heated to an elevated temperature until there is a non-linear increase in the conductivity of the body, wherein the electrical field is between 7.5 V/cm and 1000 V/cm;
- b) switching the power supply to current control at the onset of the non-linear increase in the conductivity of the body wherein under current control the current limit is set such that the power dissipation during sintering is from 10 to 1000 mW mm−3;
- wherein a sintered body is produced in a time less than one minute from the onset of the non-linear increase in the conductivity of the body.
