Abstract
Various spinal plating systems for use in treating spinal pathologies are provided. In certain exemplary embodiments, the spinal plating systems can be configured to allow a surgeon to select a bone screw construct having a particular range of motion for attaching a spinal plate to bone as needed based on the intended use. In one exemplary embodiment, the spinal plating system includes a first bone screw that is polyaxially movable relative to the spinal plate, and a second bone screw that has a range of motion that is substantially limited to a single plane.
Claims16
A spinal plating system, comprising:
- a spinal plate having a thru-bore formed therein and adapted to
- interchangeably receive a first bone engaging fastener and a second bone engaging fastener,
- directly engage a portion of a head of the first bone engaging fastener such that a shank of the first bone engaging fastener is movable in proximal, distal, medial, and lateral directions relative to a central longitudinal axis of the thru-bore when the head of the first bone engaging fastener is seated in the thru-bore, and
- directly engage a portion of a head of the second bone engaging fastener such that a shank of the second bone engaging fastener is limited to movement in only one of a medial-lateral direction and a proximal-distal direction relative to the central longitudinal axis of the thru-bore when the head of the second bone engaging fastener is seated in the thru-bore.
A spinal plating system, comprising:
- a spinal plate having a thru-bore formed therein, the thru-bore having a first interior surface and a second interior surface, the second interior surface having a different shape than the first interior surface;
- a first bone engaging fastener having a head and a shank extending therefrom, the head of the first bone engaging fastener including a portion having a first shape that is configured to interact with the second interior surface such that the shank of the first bone engaging fastener has a polyaxial range of motion when the head of the first bone engaging fastener is seated within the thru-bore in the spinal plate;
- and
- a second bone engaging fastener having a head and a shank extending therefrom, the head of the second bone engaging fastener including a portion having a second shape different from the first shape that is configured to interact with the second interior surface such that the shank of the second bone engaging fastener has a single plane of motion when the head of the second bone engaging fastener is seated within the thru-bore in the spinal plate.
A spinal plating kit, comprising:
- a first bone engaging fastener having a shank with a head formed thereon;
- a second bone engaging fastener having a shank with a head formed thereon;
- and
- a spinal plate having a thru-bore formed therein and adapted to interchangeably seat the head of the first and second bone engaging fasteners such that
- when the head of the first bone engaging fastener is seated within the thru-bore, the shank of the first bone engaging fastener can move up to 15° in all directions with respect to a central longitudinal axis of the thru-bore,
- when the head of the second bone engaging fastener is seated in the thru-bore, the shank of the second bone engaging fastener is limited to movement up to 5° in a first direction with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the thru-bore, and up to 5° in a second opposite direction with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the thru-bore, and
- when the head of the second bone engaging fastener is seated in the thru-bore, the shank of the second bone engaging fastener can move up to 5° in the first direction with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the thru-bore, and up to 5° in the second opposite direction with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the thru-bore.
A method for implanting a spinal plate, comprising:
- positioning a spinal plate against bone, the spinal plate having a thru-bore formed therein;
- selecting from one of
- a first bone engaging fastener having a head and a shank extending therefrom, a portion of the head of the first bone engaging fastener having a diameter such that the shank of the first bone engaging fastener is polyaxially movable relative to a central longitudinal axis of the thru-bore when the head of the first bone engaging fastener is seated in the thru-bore with an interior surface of the thru-bore directly contacting a portion of the head of the first bone engaging fastener, and
- a second bone engaging fastener having a head and a shank extending therefrom, a portion of the head of the second bone engaging fastener having a diameter such that the shank of the second bone engaging fastener is limited to movement in one of a medial-lateral direction and a proximal-distal direction when the head of the second bone engaging fastener is seated in the thru-bore with an interior surface of the thru-bore directly contacting a portion of the head of the second bone engaging fastener;
- and
- inserting the selected bone engaging fastener through the thru-bore in the spinal plate to implant the shank in bone and to seat the head of the selected bone engaging fastener within the thru-bore.
