System and method for obtaining control of a logical unit number

A computer program product residing on a non-transitory computer readable medium having a plurality of instructions stored thereon which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

• receiving a Mode Select command concerning a logical unit number (LUN) from a first host, wherein the Mode Select command defines control information and host identifier information concerning the first host, and the LUN is currently being controlled by a second host;
• processing the Mode Select command to determine if the control information and host identifier information included within the Mode Select command signifies an intent by the first host to seize control of the LUN from the second host;
• and
• if the control information and host identifier information signifies an intent to seize control of the LUN from the second host, writing the control information and host identifier information included within the Mode Select command to a buffer associated with the LUN, wherein the buffer includes a control field and a globally unique identifier (GUID) field.

A computing system comprising:

• at least one processor and at least one memory architecture coupled with the at least one processor configured to perform operations including:
• receiving a Mode Select command concerning a logical unit number (LUN) from a first host, wherein the Mode Select command defines control information and host identifier information concerning the first host, and the LUN is currently being controlled by a second host;
• processing the Mode Select command to determine if the control information and host identifier information included within the Mode Select command signifies an intent by the first host to seize control of the LUN from the second host;
• and
• if the control information and host identifier information signifies an intent to seize control of the LUN from the second host, writing the control information and host identifier information included within the Mode Select command to a buffer associated with the LUN, wherein the buffer includes a control field and a globally unique identifier (GUID) field.
