Abstract
Methods for the manufacture of 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane from 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane and chlorine are disclosed. Improved methods are provided for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene from 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane. Methods are also disclosed for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene from 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane and chlorine and for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene from carbon tetrachloride, ethylene, and chlorine.
Claims24
A process for the continuous production of 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane, the process comprising:
- i. continuously feeding 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane to a reactor;
- ii. continuously feeding chlorine to the reactor;
- iii. continuously or periodically feeding ferric chloride to the reactor;
- iv. maintaining the reactor at conditions of temperature and pressure sufficient to produce 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane within the reactor;
- and
- v. continuously removing 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane from the reactor.
A process for the continuous production of 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane, the process comprising:
- i. continuously feeding ethylene gas into a first reactor;
- ii. continuously or periodically feeding trialkyl phosphate, iron metal, carbon tetrachloride, and iron chloride into the first reactor;
- iii. continuously agitating the first reactor;
- iv. continuously removing a first reaction stream from the first reactor, where the first reaction stream includes 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane, carbon tetrachloride, and one or more by-products or catalyst residues;
- v. continuously separating the 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane and carbon tetrachloride from the one or more by-products or catalyst residues to form a second stream;
- vi. continuously feeding the second stream, which includes 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane and carbon tetrachloride, to a second reactor;
- vii. continuously feeding chlorine into the second reactor;
- viii. continuously or periodically feeding ferric chloride into the second reactor;
- ix. maintaining the reactor at conditions of temperature and pressure sufficient to produce 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane within the second reactor;
- and
- x. continuously removing 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane from the second reactor.
